Buchanan claimed years later that the low blow from Duran resulted in a burst testicle. As much as I like Buchanan, I find that impossible to believe given that he was back in the ring less than three months later. He also claimed that Duran was unable to land a punch on him and that he left the ring with his face completely unmarked... Clearly untrue! It gives me the impression that Buchanan brooded so much on the way the Duran fight ended that he eventually believed what he wanted to believe.
I know a doctor said he had a swollen testicle and was in extreme pain. Where did you hear he had an operation? It sounds unlikely to me that he had an operation on his balls and was back in the ring 12 weeks later.
Difficult to determine the extent of the alleged injury, but Roberto Duran did definitely hit Ken Buchanan in the Family Jewels.
Yes. He still deserved a 5-minute respite...then would have continued getting hammered, like he did all night.
Yeah. Roberto was winning that fight all night long. Interestingly Duran said for years that Ken was his toughest opponent even after he lost to Esteban De Jesus and Sugar Ray Leonard. Maybe Roberto was in an Egyptian river - Denial.
I picked up a random KO from my collection last week (i like the surprise element, like dipping in to a goody bag) and what emerged was the August 84 issue with Spoon on cover. In it, it has a preview of Hearns-Duran (as well as King Peanut vs Coetzee) and states Tommy will win a wide UD... "Duran of course will react in character giving no credit to the winner an insulting Hearns manhood"
You ever read any stories about Sung Kil Moon? I don’t have any mags and you can pick up some neato stuff in those pages.
Only that he and Myung Woo Yuh, were both considered for a Korean remake of Butch Cassidy and the Sundance Kid, with Moony playing the Paul Newman part. Other than that, unsure mate. But I used to love Fight Night on ITV back in the late 80s / early 90s. Monday nights when you could see lots of Moon, Yuh…as well as the likes of Esparragoza, Arbachakov, Kittikasem, etc. Top drawer stuff.
Yes, he completely mischaracterized the entire event to his benefit. It was actually he that hit Duran after the bell, when Duran followed up the punch he landed was just a light afterthought. Buchanan tried to milk it for a DQ because he was losing the fight badly and when he realized he wasnt getting the DQ he tried to continue the fight but he had already overplayed his hand and wasnt allowed to continue. Then he tried to save face by acting like it was a devastating injury.
