A a Hopkins fan surely you can see the irony in calling up what you perceive to be someone else as breaking the rules? Hopkins can only remain competative by fighting on GBP cards and being allowed to flaunt the rules in every possible way. He holds more than John Ruiz, he headbutts more than Evander and throws more elbows than Tyson. Hardly an act of nobility, this is how he's earned his reputation as a dirty fighter that has to cheat to win or stay competative. Had he not cheated, Calzaghe would have beaten him by about 8 rounds, maybe more. Faking of the low blows was the most pathetic thing I've seen from someone who speaks in 3rd person and proclaims himself a legend... even though his best wins are against little men moving up. Anyway, all that will be remembered in years to come from this fight will be that both were past their prime, Calzaghe won and Hopkins needed help in the ring by questionable Joe Cortez, who certainly seems to favour his home fighters. I'm American and I've noticed it, national pride, or blatant cheating?
Did you see my question a few posts up? Not a snide dig but a genuine question. What do you think? As a boxing fan I still think my question is a legitimate one that you have simply answered by attacking Hopkins.
People say Hopkins made Calzaghe fight his fight... well almost true. He made Calzaghe show some adjustment (but this is nothing new), but Calzaghe made Hopkins fight his fight also. The style may have been Hopkins, the pace however was Calzaghe's, so rather than box properly Hopkins had to hold to limit leverage and damage. If he'd stood in the center of the ring he'd have been exhausted, maybe even stopped late. Prior to the fight I'd have never thought this, but the faking of the low blows and the conviction in the acting makes me thing Hopkins would have taken an easy road out of that fight.
Legitimate maybe, ironic? Certainly. Butting and throwing elbows is dangerous, yet due to your affiliation with Hopkins you choose to highlight someone else's questionable rule breaking that really isn't remotely on the same level. Ask yourself who influences their fights more and can change the outcome more through their perceived cheating? All fingers point to Hopkins sadly, yet due to a clear dislike of another fighter you instead highlight theirs. Makes the legitimacy of your questions seem like just another way to take away from a good victory despite the odds all being in your boys favour. I could be wrong, it just seems that way.
Are you talking about the 'cuffing' or 'slaps'? It is an interesting one. His opponents have never really to my knowledge bitched about it actually quite the opposite: they have ridiculed him for it. That being said it's not within the rules and perhaps he ought to be called on it....but this is unlikely ever to occur whilst his opponents fail to realise that it helps wins Calzaghe fights by swaying the judges on the basis that Calzaghe is outworking his opponents by landing with a higher volume of punches... He said in his autobiography he 'slaps' because it lulls his opponent into a false sense of security in exchanges...he cuffs them with a few pitty patters then cracks them with a harder punch that stuns them...
I think you must be having problems understanding/reading my question. I have not accused Joe of slapping in the Hopkins fight but, just to make it clear, JOE DID NOT SLAP OR CUFF HOPKINS ONCE. Okay? Now read the question once again & try to answer. Third time lucky, I have my fingers crossed for you. Good answer, thanks mate. He doesn't always do it but there have been some notable occasions where I have thought "he really is hitting with the inside of the glove". Sometimes, however, I think it is just the way he delivers his punches that makes it look like he's cuffing or "slapping" when in reality they are legit.
I can understand you perfectly well, you're a bitter Hopkins fan with a bee in his bonnet about him getting beaten (yet again...) by someone who adapted to his style and beat him at his own game. As a Hopkins fan you dont have the right to dare question another fighter of breaking the rules. Anyway, you didn't ask a question, you made a statement. Please try and understand the difference between the two :good I have my fingers crossed that you now know the difference and can apply this new skill in future
Hopkins cleverly negated most of JCs offence - so no, Calzaghe did not hurt Hopkins. The welshman still won decisively.
A semantic debate with a keyboard warrior, never had one of those before. I'm not bitter, I'm a boxing fan not a fanboy. Anyway you're boring me now because it's clear you want to whittle away your afternoon arguing.
Yep I agree. Like I say though, it's interesting because whilst boxers implore refs to stop certain fighters holding (Hatton - Mayweather) or headbutting (practically everyone with Holyfield post Tyson) nobody to my knowledge has encouraged a ref to stop Calzaghe hitting them with the inside of his glove despite it being outwith the rules... There is a bit of logic behind the cuffing when he does do it...if his opponents were smart they would pick up on it and have it stopped whenever it does happen...but I have a feeling the likes of Pavlik and Lacy will continue to ridicule and pay the price :yep That being said, as you yourself have acknowledged, more often than not Joe does fight within the rules and his punches are legit.
LOL, when one has no point let the insults fly eh? So because I dont agree with you and am articulate enough to pull you up as a Hopkins fan and JC detractor I am therefore and keyboard warrior and fanboy? Maybe if you were a fan of boxing throwing elbows and butts would be frowned upon, are you sure UFC wouldn't be more your thing? Don't give up Dan, I'm sure there will be some more JC threads you can pick faults in him. It's not like he doesn't have a lot of them is it? I think he was lucky against Hops, he didn't avoid many of those buts and had to low blow his way to victory. Hopkins landed the best shot of the fight too when he threw his famous lead right, butt and hook combo. Class act, the sport needs more like Hopkins and his fans :rofl
What insults? You seem to be attempting to justify Joe's "fouls" by saying Hopkins does more. That is pretty flawed logic from a self proclaimed articulate man. My statement merely pointed out that Joe, at times, hits with the inside of the glove. Beatboxer, a Calzaghe fan, agrees with me & articulates his argument well above. I'm sure an intelligent man such as yourself can appreciate that. I'm fully aware of Hopkins' misdemeanours, he's still my favourite fighter but, more importantly, I'll still be watching boxing long after he's retired. If ever! :good
