Did Calzaghe lose a step since Kessler?

Against Kessler, he looked much sharper, active and capable. At 36, he's very old for someone with a swarmer's style. And yes, Hopkins was even older, but he held on 17 times a round and cheated to get breathers; the Ruiz fight plan.

I would like to see him fight Jones though. Jones' last fight was very entertaining.

If Joe was fighting one of his early opponents tomorrow I think he would once again look like superman. Personally I think it has a lot to do with the quality of opponent. Joe's workrate and nothign else won him the fight agains Hopkins.

The Kessler fight was only 6 months ago he couldn't have deteriorated that much.

Lacy....from there it's been a steady decline....adaptability, and ring intelligence got him past Kessler and Popkins....a credit to Joe:good

Against Hopkins, Calzaghe was less motivated, less well prepared. He's not hungry no more. He's in it for the money now; nothing but the money. In legacy terms, Calzaghe's retired already.

Joe looked "great" because he was fighting garbage. He steps up to C+ B- in Kessler and he has to "work". He fight A+ level and looks like he is a C+ fighter and gets his ass whooped but saved by terrible judging, that is the Hopkins fight.

Considering his peak was arguably from 97 to 04, of course he has declined.

Sure it can, a fighter can age over night.

Remember James Toney vs Samuel Peter. I think there was 5 months between both fights and Toney went from a good fighter to being almost shot. Sure, Peter was in better shape the second time, but that shouldn't account for the difference between a close fight and a total shutout.

It's nothing to do with ageing over night. Calzaghe's lost motivation, hunger, drive. He's in it for the money now. He's done it all, beating Kessler. Nothing to spur him on, anymore. That's why his performance against Hopkins was indifferent.

He could come back if he was motivated to, but there's nothing to motivate him anymore. He feels he's done it all; who can blame him!
