he knew he was slipping so he quit at the top of his game - a rarity in boxing,

he finished undefeated with his looks and mind intact .

I guess his haters would have more respect for him if he was broke and carried on till he got KO'd by journeymen on the way to the laughing academy.

I thought he retired at the right time. He accomplish enough when he beat Kessler. Outpointing Hopkins was icing on the cake. There was no pressing need to fight Froch or Chad Dawson, you could make a case for fighting Pavlik but I believe he was still a middleweight at the time.. But lets face it, mans gotta get payed and fighting Jones was $. If I wanted to retire, I'd prefer to make it a superfight and get set up with a truck load of money

Many American cant handle the fact that Calzaghe beat Americas 2 best SMWs from his era and then beat Hopkins and Jones.
They would only be happy if he had lost, instead it haunts them he didnt

 

There was a tremendous amount of criticism of Calzaghe (which he was WELL aware of) at the time he retired regarding the universally disputed outcome of the Hopkins fight and his choosing to take on the corpse of RJJ in a farcical exhibition match. What the **** do you think??

 

I think he was probably sick of training and fighting all the time.He had a good career and thought it best to go out on top.He beat some good fighters and was unbeaten,what better time to go out?If he had fought Froch and won then retired people would say he did it to avoid Ward or whoever else.He could have gone on until he eventually lost his 0 but why bother doing that.

The outcome of the Calzaghe/Hopkins fight wasnt disputed at the time, in fact many called for Hopkins to retire after Calzaghe bossed him about, that is why Hopkins was considered an underdog against a fighter 2 divisions lighter .
As for the corpse of Jones, Jones had just easily beaten Tito considered by some as Hopkins biggest win.
Many picked the then #6 LHW Jones to win and also dont forget that this corpse years later put Hopkins down and Hopkins had to pretend it was an illegal punch as he couldnt continue, also that this corpse after that was ahead on one card against Lebedev who looked unlucky to many against CW champ Huck and Jones could have been credited with a KD in that fight.

Calzaghe retired because he beat the top SMW and top LHW :smoke
