    his conditioning was immense

    but on the other hand it needed to be as he very rarely did much sparring...

    His conditioning level was insane; he's one of the few modern fighters who'd not only have been ready to fight 15, but would've been even tougher to beat in that scenario. He should market a line of conditioning programs for Heavyweights- there's a fat market (pun intended) for it.

    Once he got in the ring, Joe Calzaghe was one of the mentally strongest fighters out there. That was the key. Everything else was secondary.

    He always came to outwork his opponents. THat strategy fits perfect for his body due to his insane conditioning. I dont know many other fighters who could do that today.

    - It's extraordinary to think he rarely sparred, but could just come into the ring and throw more puches than his opponent.

    - This must have kept his strength, where all the sparring was not taking out of him - if that makes sense?

    You can't win a fight running a marathon; Conditioning is one thing being mentally prepared is another. Being able to completely relax in the ring lends to a fighters stamina. Joe was just a few fighters that are able to completely relax in the heat of battle, thats what makes it appear as though he has in-human stamina .

    You might be on to something there. I know having too many gym wars can shorten a career, so it's possible that lack of sparring helped lead to him being fresher on fight night.

    Calzaghe was a throwback. Most fighters today can't jog 12 rounds. They're over muscled for the most part. look back at SRRobinson, LaMotta, those guys from that era were friggin animals. Greatly conditioned lean and tough.

    I hate the fact that Joe could booze up, pig out on choccolates and pasta and lie on the couch between fights, and then hit the gym 10 weeks prior to a fight and still be in better shape than guys who never drank alcohol, had personal nutritionists and never took long breaks. He simply had a ridiculously high metabolism. Although I bet Joe has gotten pretty fat since retiring.

    I mean read his autobio - he writes stuff like "I try not to eat at night" or "I hate eating breakfast, but I try to during training". God, most of us do that ALL THE TIME, and we could never squeeze down to 168!
