Did calzaghes legacy increase or suffer for hopkins fight ?

Improved it, he beat the best fighter at 168, and the best fighter at 175 in consecutive fights :deal

 

Its a very weak era at this time.
All Ward had to beat was Calzaghe leftovers and leftovers of leftovers.
Just look at this old post about J Lacy who many dont rate and compare him to todays top 10

Reid a top 5 SMW rated higher than Calzaghe by some and a former world champ who looked unlucky against Ottke years later and beat undefeated Magee, who now old is challenging Kessler for the WBA regular title next. Shows how weak the era is again.

Woodhall is a better win than Froch when you consider, Froch hadnt at that time beaten a SMW champ, Woodhall had beaten WBC champ Malinga, beaten world rated former WBC champ Nardiello, beat world rated SMW Branco (future WBA LHWchamp) who beat G Johnson when prime which was Frochs big fight before Ward only won by Mdec when Johnson was an old SMW journeyman, Woodhall also beat Catley who became WBC SMW champ

Veit when undefeated who went on to hold a SMW title and has a better resume than most of the current top 10.
The win Calzaghe had over Veit was a very good victory.
The first time Calzaghe beat Veit, Veit was 30-0 and hadnt beaten anyone of real note, hence he was blown away in a round by Calzaghe.
When Calzaghe beat Veit a 2nd time Veit was an accomplished world rated 45-1 fighter who had some solid victories behind him, and was top 10 rated.
Veit had beaten undefeated Dziarra who wasnt a great fighter but did go on to beat L Mock and undefeated M Oral who would go on to challenge MW champs A Abraham and S Sylvester recently.
Veit had also beaten beaten undefeated Guerrero for the European union title.
Veit beat future title challenger Salem and Mock.
Veit also beat world rated C Brewer with an educated destructive 9th round KO.
A note on Veit. He only ever lost to world champs or fighters who became world champs and has victories over Mock, Salem, Perdermo (a future Kessler challenger), Brewer when Brewer was world rated and Veit beat undefeated Braehmer who became WBO LHW champ, never lost in the ring.
Also a great away victory for Calzaghe in Germany

Starie who was a top 10 SMW who beat undefeated C Woods who beat G Johnson

Sheika who was a top 10 SMW coming in off a win over G Johnson

Overall thats better than Ward with

Eubank, Reid, Woodhall, Veit as SMW champs to go with then top 10 SMWs Sheika and Starie

 

Hopkins showed Joe's lack of skill in quite a stark way, so I would say it was a bad move for his legacy but good for his bank account.


Personally I wouldnt have taken the Bernard fight if I was Joe, no. I wouldnt want to get shown up like that by an old guy. Instead I would do the obvious thing, fight bigger fights when I was younger.

Considering Calzaghe was coming to the end of his career and in my eyes he won a hard ugly fight (115-112 / 114-113) and considering Hopkins went onto beat Pavlik and Pascal twice whilst becoming the oldest champion in the history of boxing its proved how Hopkins wasnt finished (especially if you take into consideration the Tarver and Winky fights)

 

Why then would Ward's stock rise for beating Dawson in a division he should never belong (or in other words - drained) who beat a much much much older version of hopkins, while the version of Hopkins Calzaghe fought sonned Pascal later who sonned Dawson?
