He had a good trainer and I’m sure he was well aware of who Weaver was and what his best weapons were. I think they tried to shore up Williams’ defense against the left but in the end weren’t able to fix the problem. James Tillis, Jessie Ferguson, Mike Weaver, Mike Tyson, Jerry Jones, Tommy Morrison and a possibly a few others all had Williams down or hurt with the left
Carl Williams was always a sucker for the left hook, numerous fighters put him down with it. Holmes never really had a left hook, which is why Williams was effective against him along with troubling Holmes with the jab.
Yeah Weaver was noted as a slow starter, he got stopped a few times early. Williams did the right thing coming out asserting himself early, just unfortunate he got caught. I always liked Williams as a fighter, had a very pleasing style Tall, Athletic, Great Jab, just his chin that let him down really. But he was in some great fights win or lose.
He's a lot like Tate in that if he happened to sport a rock solid jaw he would have been quite a fighter.
he did not make big mistake this could happen to anyone being drop by Tillis & Ferguson was mistake but really did have Weaver ready to be taken. Weaver was just brilliant fighter when switched the on button
Probably got cocky, and it cost him. Also lucky he didn't meet Tucker, Broad, and a few of the other young heavyweights.
It is true that Weaver was a bit hurt and Williams got reckless. You could almost call it a lucky punch.
