Hello fellow fight fans, my first post here am a big fan of boxing from the 1970's and 1980's as that was my era of boxing! i have seen alot of threads on the great middleweight fighter carlos monzon did he avoid any one? i can only think of one fighter calling out monzon that carlos did not meet in the ring and thats john conteh i met john last year, and i asked him about the monzon fight he said he wanted the fight really bad, but monzon was not willing to give his middleweight title up to go up and fight john.
One of Monzon's attributes that helped to make him a great fighter and a legend, was to have the wisdom, and wisdom he may have lacked OUTSIDE of the ring, but the wisdom IN the ring, to know what division he was best suited for. Better to stay in a weight class and become a legend there, and dominate it, than to gamble foolishly I say.
Yes, but monzon had legendry bad times cutting weight! and it was day of the fight weigh in back then! he had to cut 4 pounds for the emile g 2 fight morning of the fight! he had to cut alot of weight for the napoles fight think i read he cut 12 pounds week of fight! so he might of been stronger and even hit harder! with out cutting all that weight! in last weeks british boxing news there was a great article on monzon, they said when he went to fight nino the italians couldnt believe the size of his shoulders and his height which boxing news said was 6 foot 2! thats bigger than some heavyweights. He was a freak of nature
I can't see how you can criticize a fighter for not leaving his own weight class and going up (the equivalent of two weight classes today) to fight a guy in a weight class he wasn't even campaigning in in the first place. There was some talk that Monzon might've avoided Valdez for a couple of years before they finally fought, but that's all I can remember.
I'm sure he could've won some fights above MW, although Conteh is questionable. I don't think Carlos wanted to risk it. I guess it was better to be number 1 in his comfort zone than risk his invincible reputation entering the unknown. Monzon was a boxer and a movie star. You win, you're a god. You lose, you're as good as yesterday's news.
Its the modern "thing" with division hopping. Monzon was a middleweight and in those days any move up to 175 was optional whereas these days any new champ at 160 is automatically ducking the 168 guys if he doesn't move up in weight within a couple of fights.
Monzon was 5 ' 11 1/2". I dont know why his height keeps getting exaggerated. he was a great Middle but did not want to fight Conteh at LH .He would only have lost his middleweight title, if he had won the Light Heavy crown, [he would have had to relinquish one of them].I doubt he could have beaten Conteh, and perhaps he felt the same,he was making more money in the 160lbs division anyway.
Monzon didn't duck anyone. He fought Napoles instead of Valdez because of money. The Cuban was bigger draw than Rodrigo at that time. Monzon that fought Napoles was in his prime and when finally he faced Valdez he was declining. Carlos had novocaine shots to help artretism pain on his hands. Monzon knew that before the first fight Valdez's brother was killed and he wasnt focused enough so he gave him a rematch at age 35, while Rocky was in his prime and gave one of his best fights in that rematch. Is that ducking?
I think that he was 185 cm (6'1) at least Tony Mundine was listed 182 cm and Monzon looks taller than him: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=KtTh1Oxw9RQ&feature=PlayList&p=A7FE020EA4964DD8&index=0&playnext=1
