He got punched in the face repeatedly, didn't train and barely threw. Hell his last round rally was entirely based on Martinez being sloppy and tired. Anybody can beat him that has a hint of World class about them. I wouldn't pick him over any of the top 168 lbs fighters where he is bound to end up.

I can't believe people thinking he didn't make mexico proud. As long as he gave his best and didn't stop trying people should be proud of him. Thats provided he's not a drug cheat....which umm he probably is....

Yes. He was never going to be on Martinez's level ability wise, that part should've been clear to everyone, but he took punishment and got outclassed for 11 rounds before he took his opening and almost won. It was a great display of bravery and balls in there.

he is what he is... the only thing that will improve is the level of his opposition and that will make him look worse

he has fought with all the advantages you can think of, weight, judges, no drug tests, sulaiman, you take all those advantages away and he is a C level fighter with a famous name that he has used to his benefit

    :hat

Junior did it for me just stepping in the ring against Martinez.Everybody knew-including himself-that he was going to be outclassed. But he got in there and was swinging until the end of the fight( one of those swings almost changed the whole story).
Im not any longer a detractor, his technical limitations are a fact. But he belongs there.

Nope, because Mexicans are known to fight from round 1, this is a Championship super fight, you have to give it all.

If Chavez jr didn't Knock Down Martinez in the 12th, It would look so bad for Chavez jr who is way behind in all of the Score Cards.
A Shut out WIN for Martinez.

    Ahhh, ok. Thanks.

That makes sense now and matches Julio's expression/reaction to the question.

We knew Martinez was in another class when it came to skills. Chavez needed to impose his physicality and he didn't. The 12th round was a combination of Martinez getting a little too careless (Probably while being tired from throwing so much) and Chavez taking the chance by "punching in between the shots" as Freddie urged. Chavez did not at any point really try punching in between the shots because he was getting busted up and hurt by Martinez. He didn't take those risks for the entire fight really and was thoroughly getting outclassed.

When I saw the first round, and Chavez was circling around and moving I basically face-palmed myself. I know 1st rounders are feelers, but Chavez was not going to win that fight and mentally needed to not be in a place of "feeling out." He needed to set the tone. He threw less than thirty punches a round. Martinez almost threw 3:1. I said it was going to come down to lungs and Chavez's power. Martinez proved his skills and stamina were far too superior. Chavez proved his size and power were rather meaningless advantages. In a sense, Martinez's great performance gets tainted because Chavez dropped him. Chavez did not really risk much except for in the final round. At that point I feel it's too late. He didn't take chances because he didn't want to get KOed. That was pretty clear. That's why he did a lot of covering up and backing away. A lot of moving around for a guy that called his opponent a ballerina. What's funny is Martinez actually urged exchanges and inside fighting. He knew he had the skills & speed to potentially set traps and stop Chavez. It was a great performance from Martinez, and somewhat disappointing for Chavez.

Many, including myself, obviously had unrealistic hopes for Chavez. He was outpointed by Zbik IMHO and looked poor against Rubio. His workrate was worrying against Lee. However, he did look better in that fight than the other two. I thought that he got down in weight in a more healthy manner. The reality is he does not fight 100% of the rounds like his father, nor does he have the skills. That just makes him a huge MW with decent power and an affinity toward body-punching...
