did Chavez Jr's performance surpass your expectations?

He had one good round and otherwise got the dog**** kicked out of him. He did worse than I expected.

No. His performance was disappointing. He could've done so much more. He was durable enough to take EVERYTHING Martinez had and not even stumble. He just couldn't deal with the movement and didn't bully Martinez enough when he found out that fact. He also had the power to hurt Martinez, but I don't think he was confident enough in his own ability.

 

Nah, I expected him to be getting outclassed all night with a slim chance of pulling it off if he manages to catch Sergio with a big one or two and follow up on that.. Exactly what happened.

 

Nope it didn't, he did exactly all he had to do in the 12th but it was too late by then. I do believe Chavez is going to learn for this in the rematch but still.

 

there were times in the fight i thought chavez was going to give it up. he had better then half ass defense and proved that he has his father's chin. so in that aspect yes he surpass my expectations. how ever he late me down by not throwing as manny punches as i wanted him to when he had martinez on the ropes. i can understand him not throwing as much in the middle of the ring because sergio looking like a prime mw pacman, but when he had him on the ropes i think he should have dont more. he let me down until the 12th.

 

My thoughts exactly outside of 30 seconds he fought like a *****. I think martinez hurt him early. I think when he landed those three uppercuts in a row around the 3 or so round. They hurt him an he thought twice about letting his hands go when he had martinez stuck in the corners.
Martinez has a realy nice jab. Good power and great speed on it. Loved seeing him double it. Completly ****ed chavezs rhythm up.

 

this fight went exactly as i expected.... besides the knock down, of course.

I agree with this. Martinez was able to make him bleed from the mouth and nose with those lefts, but he was never able to seriously hurt Jr. the same way he hurt guys like Macklin and Barker. The huge ring certainly didn't help Chavez either.

I also agree with your assessment that Chavez was not confident he could win the fight. He just seemed content to survive for most of it, and didn't bring nearly as much pressure nor was he nearly as active as he had to be. The 12th round clearly demonstrated that Chavez DOES have it in him to do better against Martinez than he did tonight. I think Chavez himself believes he can actually beat Martinez now too. I don't think he fully believed it going into the fight, and just wanted to not get KO'd in brutal fashion.

I think Chavez would be well served to bring in a new trainer who could help round out his game (possibly Robert Garcia, after seeing how he gave Maidana a jab, some defense, and more offensive variety, or Naazim, or Cotto's trainer Pedro Diaz.) I also think that with 2-3 more world-level fights- and the experience that would come with it- he would do MUCH better in a rematch against Martinez. But he clearly needs to work on his timing, jab, and straight right. His head movement and high guard are decent, but in a huge ring he couldn't cut the ring off on Martinez. Timed straight punches to Martinez would make it much easier to close the distance, and allow him to sneak in uppercuts afterward. It's clear he has serious trouble getting to Martinez when he's trying to wing hooks at him from mid range.

 

I was expecting him to get dominated and knocked out by round 10

Instead he got dominated and dropped Martinez in round 12 . . .


So yeah he did better than I thought he would
