People forget that Berto is shorter than the average ww like Cotto. Collazo is a bit bigger and looked it against Berto. What surprised me was how inefficient Berto was when in close. Many of us saw how Collazo fights, but didn't expect Collazo to have the kind of offensive success that he had against Berto. That was the surprise I think to many of us.
I didn't expect Collazo to beat the crap out of Berto, but he sure did. I knew the judges would give the fight to Berto though. Collazo was cheated and should get a rematch, plus, the judges should be investigated, esp. the drunk criminal who had it 116-111.
Anyone who has seen him fight before shouldn't have been surprised. The guy is slick as ****. Hatton under-estimated him badly and nearly came unstuck .
callazo fought a great fight. everyone saying he fought like grabage needs to rewatch that fight. sure one or two rounds the hands down thing was stupid but he was trying to counterpunch so what, hmmm joe calzaghe come to mind? Callozo is way better than he is getting credit for in this thread
*********************************** I'll keep this alive and see if I can throw anything insightful here. well yeah the machismo is the only explanation I can come up with for Collazo's behavior (and I think the Taylor reference is a good example) it just goes to show you that taking corner instructions or sticking to a fight plan is easier said then done What you said about Berto (bolded) is what I like about him as a fighter, flawed as he is, he can certainly make adjustments in the fight to tilt things his way ... be it a knock down vs Rivera, returning fire, or switching up tactics when getting countered too much early on vs Forbes don't get me wrong, this doesn't make Berto a bonifide top 5 Welter .. but still at this stage in the game, it's refreshing to see such a young fighter (as far as his pro career is concerned) able to make adjustments, switch things up and avoid folding like a lawn chair maybe to add to what we're already been saying/suggesting about Collazo's end of it but like what you said with Berto throwing that really hard counter back at Luis in round 1 are we giving Berto enough credit for possibly having an effect on Collazo's passiveness during the fight? like im saying yeah Luis was passive .. as you pointed out in the very first post .. but what if it had something to do with this (I'll re quote you below aight? "I had a sneaking feeling Collazo would be somewhat mesmerized by Berto's speed as a wannabe speed demon himself, but I could have never predicted he would spend soo many minutes fighting like a mindless brawler, arrogant *****, and thoughtless idiot." Styles make fights is a common boxing cliche however different opponents obviously bring different elements and abilities to the table. take Luis last 2 opponents vs Berto ... both were virtual no hopers and Collazo had his way, they simply weren't good enough, point blank but Berto, while he may have his flaws as a fighter possesses both that exceptional hand speed to go with being very resiliant and incredible stamina on top of it. With that in mind ^ I don't think ALL the blame can go to Collazo here for f*cking up the fight. I mean does Collazo deserve **** .. yeah and understandably so. blaming the judjes is fine, but Collazo's his own man in there and controls his own fate. From the tone of your posts it sounds like you believe Luis flat out blew it (is that accurate to say?) however im taking the middle ground .. and saying yeah there's absolute truth to that argument but on top of that (Collazo's own shortcomings .. by deciding to drop hands .... brawl) im saying maybe Berto should be given some credit for making Collazo stray from his gameplan (which you've already done) hope that makes sense, I'll fire back in more basic english if it's lost in translation.
The most shocking thing to me was that after his bitterly disappointing career hiccups, he had a world title belt in his grasp and opted to **** the bed for two rounds rather than suck it up and keep his hands moving.
I think body shot ****ed him up, thats why he tried to fake that hes flashy or smth with his hands down, he was protecting his body that way, his corner was in full alert mode not giving advice just saying "suck it up", at times it almost felt that he'll take a knee in few situations. I actualy expected that Collazo will win this in close fight, if it wasnt those bodyshots he ate he would have won.
I had never seen him fight. Seen Berto a few times. Thought Collazo had the fight by a point of two. I cant stand how some of these judges can score rediculously out of reason.
This is refreshing to hear. A completely objective pair of eyes with no vested interest arriving at the correct scoring conclusion. :good
