Before he gets the fighters to go at each other? Something he's been doing for what more than 2 decades? When has he gotten this wrong before? Don't buy it being mere happenstance.
Cortez made a wrong move there, and Floyd capitalized on it. And he's supposed to regulate the fight, and not talk to the corner when he signaled to box.
Cortez was caught with his pants down. While PBF is knocking Ortiz out, good ol´ Joe is looking ringside. Frankly Cortez did not put himself in the position to even see whether Ortiz was down because of a punch or because of an illegal blow - he just guessed and it just so happened to be right this time. IMO Cortez´s erroneous body language is what gave Ortiz the subconscious cue that the fight was still in time out mode (despite Cortez saying time in a few seconds before). Cortez is clearly one of the most error prone refs out there and his instincts have always been questioned. Time to hang them up. Never liked this dude. He´s like the antithesis of Steve Smoger.
