Did Cotto Have Any Sense That Margarito Would Beat Him Going Into It?

What do you think? Was there anything that you noticed, anything unusual about the leadup or the early going?

I don't think so.. of course he knew there was a chance, there's always but I don't think he sensed it like you mean

Maybe a brilliant Hanibal Lector-like psychologist could read through that reserved poker face-but I sure couldn't

Here's what I observed. To me it seemed that Cotto did lots of little things randomly that I hadn't remembered seeing him do before. There were subtle things about the leadup to the fight, and the fight itself, that seemed different than usual for Cotto.

First there were his comments to the media at the Mosley post fight press conference that "...Margarito had his chance to fight me..." when he was asked if or when he would fight Margarito. That was something that was very out of character for Miguel, he would always defer to his "company."

Then there were the delayed negotions for the fight itself - which I personally put very little stock in but other people made a very big fuss about.

And then there were Cotto's comments at the final press conference when he said "...If I climb out of the ropes, or I go down, I will do so as a champion..." At the weigh in Cotto glared at Margarito during the face off after Margarito had already turned to smile at the cameras. Seemingly, not Cotto's style to act that way.

And finally at the fight itself Cotto looked very solemn and tense in the locker room - more than normal IMO, and on his way into the ring he looked very intense and full of nerves. He was completely soaked with sweat.

During the fight itself he touched gloves with Margarito after ref warnings, and had a whole different vibe than his usual killer businessman, workmanlike self. He seemed to be trying to create that 'sparring' atmosphere. In the past he wasn't one at all to touch gloves after a reset. He reluctantly half touched gloves with Mosley when Shane extended his glove, and Cotto rarely touches gloves during a fight, if ever.

Cotto seemed to be out of character, and all over the place for this fight. But maybe that's just how it seemed.

imo, no. i dont hink cotto even fathomed the idea of losing coming into the fight, i dont think any fighter does actually. going into the 7th round of the fight, i think cotto felt like he was winning it handily. i think the thought of defeat crept into back of his mind mid fight, when margarito was'nt going down from all the head snapping combinations he was landing.

I sensed that Cotto may have sensed that this was going to be much more of a physical fight and that he could get hurt against a come forward and bigger man. Against Quintana and Judah, he was on the attack from the opening bell because the other guys were much more waiting for opportunities to counter... As an intelligent, low key and realistic man Cotto is, most probably he knew he had to rely on that game that Zab and Carlos used against him and like them, he could get on the wrong side of the fight's outcome... Seems to be a possible scenario going into this .

I picked Margarito to win, but I have to acknowledge there were some very nervous moments where I was certain that Cotto wasn't just going to win this fight, he was going to school Margarito in doing so.

    Cheers, respect, 1Kolijn.

I agree 100%. There's no doubt in my mind that Arum forced this fight on Team Cotto. Top Rank backed them into a corner because they knew that Miguel wouldn't run from the challenge, and Arum took advantage of Cotto's integrity, and personal policy to trust the organization and duck no one.

I've never seen a cotto fight where he was on the backfoot as much, as early as rd 1 he was forced back by marg. And I think the unnoticed savage body rip that marg nearly dropped cotto with in the 2nd rd spoke volumes. One thing I couldn't get over was the constant bias commetary towards cotto from the so called experts. Marg really spoiled there night thats for sure. Cotto will be back, he should learn to tie up & clinch his opponent more, if he did this maybe he still would be undefeated but I can take nothing away from MArg, outstanding victory.

He thought he would easily outboxed Margarito but I think those body shots of Margarito helped wore him down as well as constantly moving away from him. I think he wouldnt thought of the fact of him getting tired.

Interesting...I didn't see half of that because they didn't show the weigh in in the UK.
