he quit and mentally it could have destroyed him. Fighters that quit have a hard time coming back.

well..he's my 2nd favorite fighter, but yes he quit......all sugar coating aside, if you chose not to continue...then you quit, it's simple as that

but even though he decided to quit, i'd still say it was a honorable defeat....he realized he was taking a beating and wasn't fighting the smartest/safest fight against Margarito and decided he should take this loss, and comeback to fight another day

i guess he figured he lost the Battle, but the war is still to be determined...

so if you really wanna sugarcoat, you can say it was more of a strategic retreat......but there was no option for that, so i clicked yes

Floyd offered Margo a fight and Margo turned it down.

    Cotto quit, deal with it.

:lol: Spin it how you want. I think the interviewer was giving him respect by not using the word quit.

I'm not saying there wouldn't be sophomoric comments coming from Floyd detractors, but I would give Floyd more respect, and I think others would, too.

Floyd's problem (like RJJ before him) is he does not seem keen on the idea of daring to be great.

Both Floyd and RJJ liked to minimize risk while maximizing earnings.

Compare that to someone like Mosley who always wants to prove himself against the best available challenges.

    See the difference?

    I agree with you.

Cotto had ZERO left in the tank in that fight.

His quitting against Margo was nothing like Peter quitting against Vitali.

Peter made a decision to STOP trying. Cotto's body was just spent.

Anyone who cannot see the difference, well, it's probably not worth explaining.

Cotto quit but he is not a quiter.

If he does it again he is a quiter.

It depends entirely on your definition of "quit" IMO. Roberto Duran is my favourite fighter of all-time, but he quit against Leonard, because he simply chose not to fight anymore. Miguel Cotto and his uncle/trainer Evangelista stopped the contest because Cotto was badly beaten and was only going to risk his health and his career in front of his wife and children by carrying on for some dated notion of bravery/manhood. I think he made a man's decision to accept defeat and not risk possible permenant injury to appease the fans (those fans of a more bloodthirsty, medieval mindset that is). To me, he did not "quit", he was badly beaten. You only "quit" if choose not to fight on for a reason other than already suffering physical pain/injury, and Cotto had. His face was a mess and apparently he was swallowing blood - a highly dangerous thing to do when you are constantly expending energy, defending yourself, and taking punches to the head and face.

The thing is now that Cotto has quit in a fight once it will be easier for him to do it again. It was a bad choice.
