I've read that Haye called his son Cassius in tribute to Ali. Surely that makes no sense?

"Cassius Clay is a slave name. I didn't choose it, and I didn't want it. I am Muhammad Ali, a free name - it means beloved of God - and I insist people use it when speaking to me and of me.'' Muhammad Ali

Surely choosing Muhammad as your own name then declaring it a free name makes less sense?

Wasn't Muhammad Ali essentially assigned by Elijah Muhammad anyways?

Anyway, **** pretentious thread. Who gives a **** about David Haye? Surely the complaint must be that he cannot claim to be inspired by Ali, as he is doing a massive discredit to everything that mans Heavyweight reign proved to be!!! He is the complete opposite to the joint greatest Heavy of all time :deal

Well, there won't be many other kids at school called Cassius, but there's loads of Muhammads.

Well the name Cassius is still synonymous with Ali, so Haye choosing this name for his son could be seen as a tribute. Ali's name change was politically motivated and part of the whole civil rights movement thing back then. A lot of muslim converts these days keep their original names.

Surely the Clay part would be the only slave part. Cassius would have been given to him by his parents.

Muhammad Ali became an infamous name despite being common as **** BUT Cassius Marcellus Clay is infinitely better.
