Did David Haye have the ability to beat Wlad but simply lacked the Courage?

Before the fight I gave Haye 20% chance to win, and by the way of KO of course. But after what we saw on Saturday night, I think he lacks the ability to defeat Klitschko.

I thought and still think he has very good power and his punches can be fast, especially straight right hand. But David is lacking in all other aspects of the game:

-his punching technique is not world class,
-he needs too much time and space to mount his offense, when not given enough time and space, his offence is half of what it normally is,
-he is unable to throw combinations or fight in close,
-he reacts badly to getting hit, and doesn't know how to defend when under pressure.

His natural abilities partially make up for the above defficiences, but not enough to beat Wlad. Surely there is always a chance to KO Wlad with the kind of power Haye has, but certainly not 20 percent, like I previously thought. That's too bad really, because the guy is really talented, but throughout his career wasn't trained properly.

i absolutely saw where he was going with his plan in the beginning. Work the body some make the big man move around, flurry a la RJJ. He just couldnt execute the last part of the gameplan for some reason. Physically or mentally he was defeated before the final bell.

This is one of those "if my aunt had a dick she'd be my uncle" kind of questions.
Lots of guys at HW can beat Wlad, in fact at that weight pretty much everybody had a puncher's chance, but it ain't happening.

    Interesting take on this.

I think that by the 5th round it became immediately clear that unless Wlad makes any serious mistakes, David had no shot. He seemed to be ok with giving away rounds and apart from the occasional lunge forward he simply didn't show that he had a coherent strategy which puzzled me because his power, speed and elusiveness you would imagine he'd be technically proficient given his attributes.

    - Even though Wlad won clealry - Haye had/has the ability to beat him - and the matter of courage doesn't come into it.

    - Something went wrong in there for him - Wlad was a very good boxer/and something within Haye just went wrong.

he could've made it a better fight, but I don't think he could've ever beaten wlad.

I genuinely dont think Haye has the boxing skills to punch and not get hit back. Basic Old school skills like lead left hooks, jab to the body and straight over the top, Right lead and roll under were just missing in his arsenal

I personally thought he had the tools, but i was wrong because attributes are very different to skills. He had the speed and and the power, but he had no delivery, and he has no idea how to control distance or where to fight at.

Therefore even if he had the balls to trade, he would have lost

    No

He simply doesn't bring enough options to the table. If you break his style down, you will actually see that he is a hugely flawed fighter, with little going for him.

If we take him at heavyweight, what does he bring?

Power - I wouldn't say concussive and consistent enough to be considered a genuine power puncher - he has to wind up that much, he totally neglects fundamental punching form, and therefore rarely lands his 'bombs' - when was the last time anyone saw him spark someone with a short, crisp shot?

Speed - okay... he's pretty quick, but the nature and shape of his punches limits his overall speed when it comes to delivery of his punches

    Footwork - utter shite

    Chin - nothing special

    Tactical awareness - none existent

    Ability to change/adapt - no

    Ring generalship/craft - **** all

Defense - non existent, aside from when he is on his bike, which doesn't really count...

Punch variation/selection - bomb...bomb...bomb... you get my drift - whatever happened to a jab, combinations, changing levels etc

Conditioning - leaves a lot to be desired

Courage doesn't come into it when you are that limited in terms of fundamental boxing skills.

He sort of reminds me of a Hamed or Jones, but obviously nowhere near as good. This is to say that he tries to use athleticism to beat his opponents, rather than being able to rely on fundamentl boxing skills - Hamed and Jones were freaks of nature, so they could get away with it... for a short while. Haye simply doesn't have the attributes to match his style - for as long as he insists on keeping with his lunging in style, he will never truly earn a fight, because it limits his potential to beating bums - any classy operator (such as Wlad) will simply pick him apart time and time again.

A very intriguing idea. As much as I despise Princess Haye, imagine what he'd be like if trained by (and if he actually listened to) the likes of a Freddie Roach or Kevin Rooney.

I said in another thread that Haye has natural talent and at times has shown a good boxing brain, but he just can't seem to pull it all together at once. All of his wins at heavyweight, bar maybe the Harrison fight, have been a bit sketchier than might be expected of a guy with his attributes. He has the raw speed and power to trouble Wlad, but he just looks a bit unpolished, I think.

He'd need to seriously examine the limitations of his stlye and his tactics. Wlad himself took time and experience to develop into the fighter he is today and was written off by some a few years back. He's also had about twice as many pro fights as Haye. On that basis, I don't see why someone with Haye's capabilities couldn't develop into a much more rounded and effective fighter, maybe under different direction...but somehow can't imagine at his age and stage this is going to happen.

i think haye has what it takes to beat him but he just wasnt explosive enough on the night ! he was up for the fight no doubt and he tried but wladimir also raised his game up very much! wladimirs defense was great that night!
i think with this experince for haye he only can get better!
    i hope he continues!
