Why on earth would Dempsey's camp have taken the fight ? no reason at all, it would have been stupid as Burt already pointed out but i have no doubts he would have flattened Greb in a real fight and Dempsey would have gotten no credit at all for it. If Greb had really wanted the fight he should have campaigned full time at heavyweight and EARNED a shot

Many would say that by beating :
    Gibbons
    Weinert
    Roper
    Rojas
    Brennan
    Miske
    Smith
    Norfolk
    Madden
    Renault

    Greb HAD earned a shot.

True, Mc. But as JF Kennedy said, "life is not fair"....I don't believe there was much of a groundswell for Dempsey to defend his HW belt against the frenetic middleweight Harry Greb.
I'm sure that if I were the Dempsey braintrust I would have
done the same thing by avoiding as Jack Kearns opined, the
"seven year itch" that was the MW wonder Harry Greb.
As said in the Godfather movie, "its bad for business"...
And boxing after all is the business of making money...

Nothing to be gained by the Dempsey camp by taking on a middleweight. If Jack had defended against Harry,
looked bad for a few rounds then blasted him out ,all the Dempsey haters would now be saying, he picked on a middleweight with one eye and he didnt look too special stopping him!
    A no win situation.
When Dempsey asked Harry to train him for Tunney he supposedly said said," not enough money ,besides I want to fight you myself".Dempsey replied ,.,"who'd pay to see that fight?"

i dont think dempsey took it easy at all on greb, but most heavyweights and class fighters take it easy on lesser fighters as a rule so they dont quit. heavyweights are a very tough division cause they often get beat up by their sparring partners- its not easy at all for heavyweights. that said i think dempsey would have koed greb without that much problems at all in in their primes. that fight would have been made had the public realley wanted it - they want the popular fight not neccesarily the interesting bout imo

Yet Dempsey gave a title shot to:

Bill Brennan, who was beaten by Greb
Tommy Gibbons, who beaten by Greb
Billy Miske, who was beaten by Greb
Gene Tunney, who was beaten by Greb

I don't really get how it was out of the out of the question for Dempsey to fight a middleweight but okay to defend against four men who lost to that same middleweight, in some cases several times and in a one-sided manner.

If that's how Dempsey was operating, Greb should have tanked a few fights to get a shot then.
He obviously wasn't the sharpest tool in the box.
He shouldn't have done so well in the sparring either.

Yeah it was Harry's own fault for making himself look too damn formidable. If only he'd lost his title eliminator against Gibbons I'm sure Jack would've fought him.

Well, he might have had to lose a few more than that, but yeah it seems it was a series of errors on his part.

If Golovkin were to beat Leapi, Jennings, Pianetta, Mormeck, Adamek, Tarver but not Vitali, would he really be considered a chance of beating Wlad?

I just posted Dempsey's reaction to Greb's plan not my own.My own view is Dempsey ko's Greb in a distance fight, ie anything over 6 rds.

ps Those men were not the defending heayweight champion Dempsey would be casitgated by his haters today if he had fought Greb then ,same with Kid Norfolk. The man who he should legitimately have fought was Wills imo.

Greb maybe wins a close points decision over Dempsey.

But most MW fighters get stomped, the likes of Darcy for instance don't make it out of round 1.
