    This is your statement.
"I have a dozen either by or about Dempsey on my shelf".

I didn't misquote you, I stated you didn't have 6 autobios of Dempsey.
Now if you don't mind, I'd like to know the titles and authors of the dozen books on Dempsey you have on your shelf?

I imagine we all prefer the truth.

The plain ,unvarnished ,without agenda, verified ,primarily sourced truth ,and we are still waiting for you to produce it in support of your many claims.

I don't have heroes ,Dempsey is my favourite fighter but if I had a boxing hero ,it would be the guy that was laid to rest in Kentucky the other week.
No need to go far to find more informed fans than I
There are many on this forum with much more expertise and knowledge than myself .
There are also some completely inane biased, and idiotic posters among us.To paraphrase Hemingway,"each man must make his own list according to his conscience".

I've many times said I'm not a historian merely a fan, cantankerous probably , an old fart yeah I'm old, bullsh*t proof, most definitely!

ps Are you aware that referee Jim Dougherty and Jack Kearns had a blazing argument just prior to Dougherty officiating in the Dempsey Gibbons fight? That Dougherty was promised $5000 as his third man fee and that it wasn't forth coming prior to the start?
As a result at 3.36 Dempsey entered the ring and Gibbons 5 minutes later, there they stood, waiting for the ref , meanwhile he was staging a sit- in in the changing rooms.
The situation was finally resolved and the delayed fight eventually went ahead just after 4.0 clock.
Point being, I doubt Dougherty was in a frame of mind to do either Dempsey or Kearns any favours at that point.
I'm sure you'll find a reference to it among your vast bibliotechque.
Do you have a sliding ladder to help you access your library? Photos would be appreciated.

There is a record of Jack Dempsey's marriage to Maxine Cates. Under the circumstances, I would think that it would have been difficult to prosecute Dempsey under the Mann Act if he did transport Cates across the state line.

Dempsey was cleared of ever pimping Cates or living off her earnings .Under cross examination she admitted he regularly sent her money.when the case against Dempsey was slung out out of court she said she would publish letters that would blacken his name ,she never did.

Would you like to produce some of those, as you stated," loads of books and articles that mention Dempsey working in a brothel?"

I've always operated on the premise that if you make a statement the onus is on you to prove it .
I suppose it's very convenient not to be bound by those strictures!

There's loads of information out there.
For example, on page 197 of Roger Kahn's book, Dempsey is quoted as saying :
"I knew some girls and I knew some madams and any time I needed a flop, the madams were glad to have me. If a customer got rowdy, I straightened the guy out."

Yes it does. You don't get to stay nights in brothels just out of kindness.

Dempsey spells it out. The madams were happy to have him because he protected their business, he bounced out the rowdys.

Wasn't he married to a lady of the evening? Who still plied her trade when Jacko wasn't around. Who are we to question anything Dempsey did and why he did it. I myself cant see how Dempsey was trapped by that "beauty". Dempsey wasn't in the chips at the time he took whatever was offered a flop and some "fun", he was a young man on his own, fighting in saloons and living cheaply, why not stay in a brothel, it was cheap and had extra's that a young man would appreciate and all he had to do was bounce a rowdy guy once in a while, please.

I agree. It was the world he lived in and I don't see anything wrong with it.
Frankly I'm amazed that anyone who knows his story would doubt (or pretend to doubt) that Dempsey worked in brothels, and I can't follow the implied suggestion that somehow bouncing in brothels was a lower moral position than being a prizefighter in that age.
