I believe both fights were probably on the level. I'm sure I've read reports of the second encounter that had Dempsey knocking Flynn out of the ring with a solid hook to the head. The crowd probably unsatisfied because they expected a better showing from Flynn. It's impossible to say for sure.
The first fight was probably legit - and I think Dempsey always corrected those who assumed he'd admitted it was a fake.
