Yes, I'd say so. He showed a very good chin - he took a lot of shots against Kotelnik and Urango too (yes, Urango did hit him) and took them well. But this was even more impressive, because Lucas hit him with about 30 murderous staright right hands both to the head and body... And Devon came right back! He did this against Kotelnik too despite being outboxed. His activity is what's (wrongly) getting him the wins. It's his greatest quality. Round nine wasn't only Lucas taking the foot off the gaspedal. Devon took the initiative well. All in all a very good comeback from the Bradley fiasco! He looked like **** there, here he looked decent with great heart in a good fight. The right hook to the side of Mathysses' head was a good weapon. All this doesn't take away from the fact that Mathysse clearly won. That fight, as a whole, wasn't close. Lucas manhandled him in the clinches with uppercuts (underrated aspect, it sapped Alexander), throwed mean right hands to the solar plexus all night and generally pushed Alexander back. Rounds 4-8 wasn't close (except 5) and neither was round 10. The only clear DA round in the fight was the ninth. The first three were close, especially the first two. I split them. Lucas should have thrown the left hook to the body more. It had a high connect ratio when he threw it and made a terrible sound when it did. He went head hunting too much and became predictable with the 1-2-3 combo. And where did the uppercuts go? Look what happened when he threw the left uppercut! A better fighter would have countered Lucas because he really went off balance after throwing the left hook to the head. But it's like with Pacman and AA - they hit so hard and have so good chins that you sometimes don't dare to counter them when they get going. Lucas also needs to finish off his opponents more effectively. He had Judah in trouble for quite some time, the same with Corley ad now Devon in three of the rounds. He has to close the show better and that's costing him. But regarding what the thread is about... lexander has to get back to the drawing board. He will never be great or even very good but he can make improvements. He very one-dimensional and doesn't have any plan B whatsoever. Why choose to sometimes stand and brawl with a fighter with an EVEN stronger chin, a very strong punch and EVEN better stamina??
I'm just watching the fight now. From last night's threads, it appears that the only thing solid about Devon is his chin and heart. Needs a rematch outside of STL as does Kotelnik. Devon fights like an amateur and these early Christmas gift decisions do nothing for him. I feel bad for Matthysse. I would say throw him in there with Maidana but I dunno, he'd get robbed too. I'm American and black though I was rooting for Lucas lol, shows race doesn't always link one to the fighters they cheer for. Devon gets hit too much and his poor defense will be the end of him once "the Great" chin of his declines. If Devon has more heart he'll give Lucas a rematch that's 12 rounds outside of STL or fight Maidana for 12 rounds. Screw Don King and his crookedness.
Far from it. He looked amateurish and lost further respect from me in his abilities. And I honestly didn't see this 'heart' that everyone here seems to be talking about. He did what he was supposed to in getting up from a flash knockdown, and continuing in the survival mode that he was in early on in the fight.
We've always known his skills were poor and he was never a great fighter. But he fought as well as he could in my opinion and that's all I ever ask from a guy. Lay it all out there. He did not do so against Bradley.
In all honesty the only clear rounds I thought should've went to Devon are 2 & 9. 3 was a swing round but Lucas was just doing the better work overall. I didn't think it was a close fight but fights like this are subjective at times and I'm a bit biased for insidefighting but also show respect for effective punching as everyone should. Many of Devon's shots in combos did not land and he did his best work with the straight left. LM won, no doubt but it wasn't a close fight imho. He showed heart in the 9th but was tired and not fighting back too much in the 10th he's lucky it didn't go 12 rounds. LM should win on any reasonable card.
I see him kind of like Ortiz, so many people were so quick to write him off. Alexander must be giving credit for taking on a tough opponent right after his Bradley fight. He could have taken the easy road for his next fight, but didnt just like Ortiz after his Maidana lost took on notable decent opponents. That takes a lot of courage. Unfortunately I feel because of his last fight with Bradley and Lucas last fight with Zab, many people were influence the way they were viewing this fight, they must remember you must score round by round and not who you feel for or think deserves the win because of the past.
This is really it. Devon is a waste of physical talent. He doesn't sit down on his punches and apply proper torque, his movement is good and his defense is ok, but he doesn't move his head enough when he's trying to be aggressive and lets his hands drop too much when he's getting hammered.. Agreed on Mathysse's ability. He is a motivated, skilled monster with an iron chin.
