Erik Morales won a welterweight title this past weekend, and that's amazing because he's campaigned most of his career at the featherweight divisions. I think it's his 4th. weight class that he has won a championship, and the first Mexican national to do so. Marco Antonio Barrera attempted to accomplish that same feat also of winning a championship in a 4th. weight class, but came short. Has Morales surpassed Barrera on the ATG list? Has he at least tied him, or is he still behind his rival? Please vote on the poll. Thanks. :bbb

I've won more prestigious titles the one Morales faught for this past saturday, BUT he was always edging out Barrera in the ATG rankings for me. Also if he can get down to Jnr Welter he can go for a real title.

What does it say Jermz? Styles make fights?

I have no arguments with anyone who has Erik Morales above Marco Antonio Barrera in their ATG list, but it better not be as a result of that farce on Saturday Night otherwise I'm liable to put stock in Marco's wins over Rojas and Ventura.

His latest fight doesn't prove anything (asides the fact he's still got some fuel in the tank) but judging from his previous form I'd always give the edge to Morales in the ATG standings.

As I say, I have no arguments with anyone who thinks Morales had a better career than Marco Antonio Barrera.

The fight from the weekend only confirmed what many of us already believed, Erik Morales is a shadow of his former self and should not be fighting in a squared circle any more. I don't think he has anything left in the tank, and even if he did, it's still a mockery compared to what he used to be capable of. I'm not sure about you guys or Bill_Butcher, but I much preferred it when the last memory I had of Erik was him putting up a spirited effort against David Diaz.

Barrera has MORE FIGHTS...While Morales has MORE HIGH QUALITY WINS AND FACED TOUGHER competition...In his prime Morales was basically undefeated AND cleaned out two guys like Jones and Pacquiao who both kicked the **** out of Barrera and badly..people say that barrera has longevity on his side but what has he acclompished since erik wasnt fightin the past few years?? he has a win against a nobody from someone in china lol and got an ass kicking by siiiiiiiiiiiiiiiiigh amir khan of all people..

Morales by the way SHOULDVE gotten the decision against diaz but got screwed by the hometown decision and wouldve been the first mexican with the 4 titles thing..

Morales isnt better by a LONG SHOT but he is clearly the higher of the two

That was some ****ing bull****, he should have got the decision. If he had his legacy as possibly the greatest mexican fighter would have been cemented, but instead he got ****ed by those judges (blind aggression over boxing skill)

Erik Morales: Manny Pacquiao, Marco Antonio Barrera, Jesus Chavez, Carlos Hernandez (past prime), Junior Jones (past prime), Daniel Zaragoza (Shot), In Jin Chi, Paulie Ayala (Bantamweight)

Marco Antonio Barrera: Erik Morales (2), Naseem Hamed, Kennedy Mckinney (past prime), Paulie Ayala (Bantamweight), Johnny Tapia (Past Prime), Rocky Jaurez, Robbie Peden

I think Erik Morales has a slight edge in terms of quality keeping in mind that I didn't include Marco's other victories against Former World Champions Daniel Jiminez, and Jesse Benevides. Some people use Barrera winning the trilogy as the distinguishing factor, and given how close their resume are to one another, that doesn't seem unreasonable to me. There is not a considerable difference in the names there.

Erik Morales did indeed beat the two men that overcome Barrera in Junior Jones and Manny Pacquiao, but I think that was a result of styles rather than confirmation that Erik was the superior fighter.

Manny Pacquiao being a southpaw, it's only logical that he'd have more trouble with fighters who are dominant with their right hand as opposed to their left. Marco is a left handed orthodox fighter, and most of his offensive arsenal comes from his left side whereas Erik has that great straight right hand and uppercut which he delivers with speed and power. Juan Manuel Marquez also had overwhelming success against the Filipino as a result of his right hand, does that make him a superior fighter to Barrera, also?

Junior Jones was rangy, tall, and had very fast hands and a decent right hand. He was often let down because he found it hard to take hard shots to the jaw himself, which is to say that his punch resistance was lacking somewhat. Inexplicably however, he was able to overcome Marco not once but twice, despite some people protesting the result in the return bout. Not me, I felt Jones won fair and square. The next fight he would take on Mckinney and get knocked out in four rounds, and it wasn't until after that when he was dealt with by Morales. Point being, it wasn't the same Jones.

Do I think Erik beats any version of Junior? Absolutely.

Both Barrera and Morales stopped being relevant at world level at around 2007 after their respective fights with Pacquiao and Marquez. Both had been in a lot of tough fights, a number of wars, but Barrera turned professional at age 15, 4 years prior to when Morales would make his professional debut. Would it be correct to say that Marco sported the superior longevity of the two? Absolutely, but it doesn't really mean anything in terms of their overall greatness.

By the same token, I also think Barrera deserved the decision in 2000 when both of them battled it out at the Mandalay Bay.

I think most of my points clearly outline that there is very little between Erik Morales and Marco Antonio Barrera. In terms of resume, there could be an argument that Morales has the slightly more impressive resume having defeated two men that overcome Marco, but then Marco won the trilogy and sports a few unheralded victories over lesser known World Champions early in his career. It all comes down to whether you favor Marco for winning the trilogy or whether you think Morales deserves to be higher based on his wins over Pacquiao and Jones. It's all subjective, and I respect your opinion.

Not at all. Forget about making history and titles for a second.

Am I meant to believe that Erik Morales would suddenly become the greatest Mexican fighter of all time as a result of beating David Diaz?

It sounds ludicrous. It is ludicrous.

I think Morales is slightly higher than Barrera in an ATG list in terms of resume, but I had Barrera winning all 3 of their fights and I think he'd be higher in a H2H list.

Morales' most recent fight should have no sway on rankings. If he wins a real title, then of course. But the "WBC International Welterweight Championship"? C'mon.

I also had Marco winning all three fights, and it'd be wonderful if one of us could expose a myth or two regarding their return match.
