Did everyone here have Frazier winning Ali vs Frazier 1?

Because everytime I watch it I have Ali winning 8 of the first 10 rounds. Frazier only wins rounds 6 & 8 out of the first 10, which makes it a draw right there. Then A case can be made Ali won the 13 or 14th round, (I scored the 14th for Ali) which comes out to a 1 point win for Ali. Even if you think Frazier's hard left hook and flurry in the last 10 seconds of the 3rd was enough to win him the round, that's still a draw at the final bell. I've never been able to understand who just about everyone believes their first fight was such a definitive win for Joe, I can only assume because Ali looked tired after 9 rounds, and the knockdown in the 15th. I'll be 41 next month, and have watched this fight dozens of times and have never been able to see it in favor of Frazier. Larry Merchant who was there covering the fight, thought Ali won as well. I'm just wondering is it my bias being a Ali fan that gets in the way of seeing what really happened. So does everyone here also agree with the majorities opinion, or are there some here who see it the way I do?

I wanted to add a poll, but you can't edit one in.

Going into the FOC, I was an Ali fan. When I drove back the 80 miles from San Antonio to Austin, after watching the fight on big screen closed circuit, and having time to think about the fight, I came to the conclusion that Frazier won (about 8-6-1).

I'm a huge Ali fan he's my all time hero, and remarkably I've only watched the fight in it's entirety once and that was then.
My impression then though was that Smokin Joe won the fight although it was close.
I can't though really go along with the little bit of recent revisionism that Frazier won it comfortably.

I had the fight even in the tenth round, with Ali ****ing up a round by playing a dumb theatre. I think he did it in other rounds too.
After round 10, Frazier was winning all rounds exept 14 on my card. He made work of Ali in the later fight definately.

Well first of all **** the scorecards if that was Ali's hardest fight, Frazier, knocked him down, knocked him around, ****ing threw him, and made his knees turn to liquid, I'll definitely give ali the next two fights but the first one, there is no doubt Frazier won in my mind.

I scored it the same as you.

    8-6-1 for Joe.

And if there was 10-point must system, Fraizer had two (11th and 15th) 10-8 rounds where Ali was badly hurt and then knocked down. 144-140 Frazier.

There were a lot of rounds close enough that they could be scored either way. If you look at the official scorecards, 10 of the 15 rounds were scored for Ali by at least one judge. So scoring the fight for Ali puts you in a minority but doesn't necessarily make you a deluded Ali worshipper.

I also had it more or less even, but with 14 the only clear round for Ali and 11, 12 and 15 all very clear rounds for Joe after that.

Still, though, there were enough close rds for it not to be out of this world to give the decision to Ali, but it wouldn't tell the story of the fight, which Joe clearly had the better of in the end.

Went and saw the fight on closed circuit that night on March 8, 1971.....there was never any doubt that Joe won that night....there was never any commentary then that Ali won the FOTC...as I said before...he couldn't do anything with Joe that night...so he lies on the ropes and hopes Joe runs outta gas...he did a lot more talking then he did fighting...at one point Joe pulls him off the ropes and tries to get him to fight...Frazier pounds him in the 11th...Ali was battered in the corner...then he floors Ali with a fantastic left hook in the 15th. It was like a pea shooter vs. a howitzer. You would have had to kill Joe Frazier in order to beat him that night. He wasn't going to lose!!! All this "Ali really won the FOTC" crap has only come up in the last few years. After that fight...Joe was never he same...he left everything he had in the ring at MSG that night 47 years ago....Biggest fight of my lifetime!!!

Frazier won the fight. Without being rude its delusional to think Ali won this fight.

Rorschach, there was a recent thread on this subject last week. This is what I wrote and how I scored. A discussion arose about the 9th round and who won the round, which I obviously scored in favor of Ali, but was worth discussing. Anyways, here was my card.

This was scored on NY's rounds basis. A very flawed system because it prevents you from giving Joe extra points for the 11th and 15th rounds. Unless the fight is scored even, in which at that time it allows supplemental points, but only if it is even. It's like a tie-breaker, but employed with major flaws.

    Round 1: Ali
    Round 2: Ali
    Round 3: Even
    Round 4: Ali
    Round 5: Frazier
    Round 6: Frazier
    Round 7: Even
    Round 8: Frazier
    Round 9: Ali
    Round 10: Ali
    Round 11: Frazier
    Round 12: Frazier
    Round 13: Frazier
    Round 14: Ali
    Round 15: Frazier

    Total: 7-6-2 Frazier

I watched the Don Dunphy version, which remarkably enough had Burt Lancaster and Archie Moore doing color commentary. Lancaster was even up in the ring afterwards with a microphone. But regardless, a great fight.

Frazier won handily. But beating Ali on the scorecards is no easy feat. But neither is beating guys like Leonard or DLH or Mayweather or other favorites on the scorecards either.
