Hard to say if the career was destroyed at anytime. He's made squillions fighting B and C-level oponents. Dropping down in weigh divisions does seem ludicrous... instead of the reverse, and perhaps settling down at the end of his career fighting at LH/W. I know Mundine had already dropped to M/W before Flash appeared in his corner during fights... so I doubt it's fair to blame Flash.
When a fighters gets older they go up in weight not down and Jeff Malcom is big on stripping guys leaving them with little resistence form stronger guys !
If you look at Mundine's career at 168 then compare it to how he has looked at junior middle and middle then you can see a big difference in him. To suggest he drop down to 160 was a bit strange but then to drop again to 154 was LOLable.
Like I said, Mundine had already dropped to M/W before we saw Flash in the corner for the first time. JC, whose idea was it for him to drop to M/W?? Any idea?
In the end it was Anthony's idea. It was just a way to mask his running from real opponents to the dumb general public.
I don't think the move to middle was such a bad idea, the problem was doing it quite late in his career. Directly after fighting Kessler, (and perhaps beforehand to some) it was reasonably clear he was at a physical disadvantage to the leaders in the division in terms of size. Guys like Froch, Kessler, Calzaghe, Ward etc are all at least 2-3 inches taller, and unless you make up for that size disadvantage with great skill or strength (which even a beast like Lacy couldn't do). Trying to go down to Jnr Middle was the worst move ever though. Does anyone have any evidence he ever made Jnr Middle though? I thought the two times he tried he didn't actually make it.
he weighed in at 159 for medley, pulling the old switcheroo a few days before the fight. Ash remembers as he had a few months of avatar bets to fill. The only two fights he weighed in at under the j mw limit were Jerez (where he luckily weighed in at the refs hotel room) at 153 1/2 and also allegedlly weighed the same for the Waters fight.
He disrepected his body and he was getting older, he is finish now, he should have stayed at 168, what he did was flat out stupid
I dont believe Mundine ever weighed at Junior Middleweight for any of his bouts he claimed to make 154. Dropping below 168 was the beginning of the end IMO like Francis said, & the only reason he dropped weight was to avoid certain fighters.
In the early 90's 'Flash' took up training a Queenslander called Selwyn Curry. Curry had lost all his bouts at around junior middle and middleweight. Under 'Flash', Curry got down to featherweight and went on to win the national, as well as other titles. Curry was certainly not in Mundine's class. But have wondered since 'Flash' started suggesting Mundine drop down divisions if he was influenced by the success enjoyed by Curry.
I remember as far back as when RJ senior was in Mundine's corner (was that for the Green fight?) it was being bandied around that Mundine should move down to MW. RJS in fact suggested it in an article I remember reading. But it's kind of suspicious that he waited until Kessler was his mandatory defence before announcing he was moving down to MW, despite having called Kessler out for a rematch for 2 years. But then moving down to JMW to avoid rematching Geale, only to change the Medley fight weight to MW at the last minute was an absolute joke and made it plainly obvious he was running away down divisions, no doubt with the misguided belief that the smaller his opponents the less chance they had of hurting him. This hovering around the MW division and continually talking up his intentions at JMW when I don't believe he ever legitimately weighed in within the limit was just a tactic to avoid any genuine threats but last night he had nowhere left to run. I wouldn't say it was Flash's fault - the only thing you could blame Jeff for is being just another yesman to an ego out of control, and as has been seen on many occasions, the mighty do eventually fall, and the longer they put it off, the further they fall.
I know Sel Currie quite well, he's a good friend. Honestly, to think that he was a Jnr Middle or Middle is ludicrous because he'd be lucky to be 5'7 IMO. He should've been around Feather-Lightweight all along.
He looks awful at that weight, his arms are too skinny and he has NO POWA, one cant help but ask "Does Anthony Mundine own a farkn Mirror" and if so has he taken a good hard look at himself of late, he looks like a skun rabbit and is now fighting like one. I dont blame Malcom unless he has stolen all the mirrors from Mandys house and installed a brain control device inside Mandys pea sized brain
He's made plenty of money and had a decent run. He was a small guy at 168 but he looked real solid there at his peak. Going down in weight, he looked weak and he wouldn't stand much chance against the young, strong upcoming guys. He ducked Golovkin, there was no reason why he shouldn't take that fight, even if he wanted to move down to 154. But in his mind, he didnt want to take that risk. So the only logical choice was to drop even further and it finally caught up with him.
