Ok...This is One of the Greatest Exaggerations and False Statements that has been floating around Boxing Forums for YEARS!!!

Now I truly understand that Common Sense, Logic and FACTS only confuses those who have NO CLUE:-(...But it's time to address the question:

Did Floyd Mayweather REALLY duck Paul Williams???

Does anyone remember when Williams was still "Wet-behind-the-ears" when he beat Antonio Margarito in July of 2007? And does anyone remember Paul Williams "People" threatend a law-suit in order for that fight to happen...Because after beating Sharmba Mitchell...that made Williams the MANDATORY challenger for Margarito's title.

So after beating Margarito, Williams was OFFICIALLY "on the map"...Right???

Which mean ALL the Top Names within the Welterweight division (Cotto, Mosley, Clottey, Zab Judah, Berto) would be knocking down the door for a chance to fight Williams (now a title holder)...Right???

Lets see...After beating Margarito...They were talking IMMEDIATE REMATCH...Williams wanted it...But Margarito chose to fight GOLDEN JOHNSON AND KERMIT CINTRON (again). Then later, an Officiall offer was made for a rematch with Williams, but Margarito took less money to fight Cotto..Hmmm, Wonder Why:think

Miguel Cotto in November of '07 beats Shane Mosley...And Immediately I was thinking...WOW...COTTO VS WILLIAMS:happy

But instead Cotto fights Alfonso Gomez:-( in April of '08
Clottey fights Shamone Alverez & Jose Luis Cruz in Dec. '07 and Apr. of '08.
Judah fights Edwin Vasquez and Ryan Davis in late 2007
Berto was fighting David Estrada & Michael Trabant in Sept of '07 and early '08
And after Mosley loses to Cotto...he fights Ricardo Mayorga less than year later (Sept. of '08)

Meanwhile Williams fights Carlos Quintana and loses. Didn't cry foul like Margarito did when Williams "starched him". He took his "L", got his rematch and HANDLED HIS BUSINESS!!! Now Officially..."BACK ON THE MAP"...RIGHT??

Williams had to VACATE is WBO welterweight title after failing to secure a "meaningful contest at 147lbs"
TRANSLATION: NO-ONE AT 147LBS WANTED TO FIGHT HIM!!!!

What was Floyd Mayweather doing in 2007 at the time of Paul Williams "Bursting on the scene"???

Fighting at 154lbs against a TOP 3 Jr. Middleweight at the time named....Wait for it...Wait for it...Oscar De La Hoya.
And then fighting an undefeated Ricky Hatton.

Now I know Oscar and Hatton are not big names like Alfonso Gomez, Michael Trabant, Golden Johnson, Jose Luis Cruz & Ryan Davis:rofl:rofl:rofl:rofl.

The Point I am trying to make in this thread...is how HILARIOUS AND JUST DOWN RIGHT IGNORANT IT IS WHEN EVERYONE ARBITRARILY CHOOSES TO SAY THAT ONLY FLOYD MAYWEATHER DUCKED PAUL WILLIAMS!!!

When the reality is...not only did these "So Called" Top names at 147lbs duck Williams...But they FROZE-HIM-OUT by eventually fighting each other.

In a way, Paul kind of got "Mike McCallum'd".

For those who don't know, McCallum was a hell of a fighter who was around while the "four kings" were on top of the sport but made his ascent after the rivalry had began to get established. McCallum never did land a fight with any of Leonard, Hearns, Duran, or Hagler. One of the main reasons he never did? Probably that he didn't come along a few years earlier than he did. I chalk it up to bad timing moreso than anything else.

In a way, that's kind of what I see happening with Williams. Exciting fighter, but he just got to the station too late and the train left him behind. Not either man's fault by any stretch of the imagination, that's just the parallel I see. And, like the Bodysnatcher, he's going to have to build his resume without that superfight for awhile. Luckily, with HBO behind him, it's not like he's shut out from big fights for the foreseeable future.

    No... Simply put.

Correct me if I'm wrong though, please. Show me where Paul or his promoter made a reasonable offer to Floyd when a bigger fight wasn't available and I'll change my opinion.

Until then, to suggest he ducked Williams is nonsensical.

Listening to Floyd talk about being the best ever, better than Ray Leonard , and all that, you'd figure he would have fought Cotto,Williams, Margarito and Mosely.
When Margarito was a factor, he challenged Floyd to his face, albeit to a deaf ear. Instead , Floyd heard the call outs of Hatton and Marquez. Certainly, the fighter better than Leonard, superior to Armstrong and Robinson , shouldn't have a problem beating all the most interesting opponents at 147.But while Cotto, Margarito and Mosely all fought one another, Floyd talked snotty and fought Hatton and Marquez , who none of the other 147 top guys would have fought for fear of being laughed at . So it may be fair to say he ducked Williams and all the other top 147 pounders. He certainly didn't go out of his way to fight Williams.

I've actually read your post now (rather than just the thread title), not like the first time when I replied.

And you make a good point.

Floyd ducked Williams as much as any of the other top 147 pounders. So if people want to claim Floyd ducked Williams, that's fine. But as you point out, so did the other top welters then.

But I still maintain that without a legitimate offer being made by either Paul or his promoter (or manager) when a bigger fight wasn't available - there's just no grounds for claiming Floyd ducked Williams.

Paul Williams is not a big draw, the risk is not worth the reward.

mate, where have you been all this time? Haven't you heard it before - PW is the most feared and avoided fighter - of course FM ducked him, just like Pavlik and a bunch of other who would like to get him in fron of their fists!

If more people thought like you, boxing forums would make more sense. It is about money and legacy. Beating Paul Williams at that time would not have enhanced both. People already would have Mayweather as the favorite coming in and the money would be dismal in compared to Ricky Hatton who brought his ENTIRE country over to America on their fight night or Oscar De La Hoya who is a country in himself.

Have you guys ever thought that maybe Bob Arum and DLH can't stand Dan Goosen and would rather do business each other? That this move has nothing to do with fighters?

Since burying the hatchet, Bob Arum and Golden Boy have been working with each other quite frequently...that is one reason why the past several years have been phenomenal for boxing fans...

My advice to Paul Williams: Ditch Dan Goosen!! He is the reason you're the most avoided man in boxing!! It's not you!!

Paul Williams fought in some ballroom in AC - didn't even fight in Boardwalk Hall.

Floyd didn't duck Paul. He has one good WW win and other than that he's all hype train. Floyd haters love to bring him up because 1)They know he will never fight him 2)They feel like he possesses the best chance to beat Floyd

Floyd said in his interview with the Rugged Man that Williams was too big, that is why he didn't fight him.

The same exact point can be made about Cotto when all these guys were at 140. When Hatton turned down a fight with Mayweather they immediately mentioned Cotto and as we know or at least HOPE some know/remember BOTH Cotto and Mayweather were with Arum at the time. Cotto and his team turned down claiming he's too green and Arum his self said so in an interview on QUITE FRANKLY sitting alongside Mayweather before the Judah fight. Now if you mention this to ******s they will tell you Mayweather ducked Cotto when both were at 140 when it was OBVIOUS Cotto was too green and ALL fans agreed to that back then.
