When you're teaching someone and they don't listen, but then they realize that if they listened that they wouldve been in a better situation ... thats the fault of the student not the teacher.

This man has instilled the same technique that he does with all his fighters ... and Hatton showed that he didn't care about that and he had his own game plan to beat Pacquiao.

I think it does hurt him because ultimately, although the fighter is the one who is in the ring, Ricky lost looking like he wasn't properly prepared, and it is the job of the trainer to prepare his fighter. Red flags should have came up in Mayweather Sr's head in the Malignaggi fight. He should be smart enough to know that although Ricky won the fight, he still reverted back to his old ways in certain parts of the fight; Malinaggi was simply not able to make him pay because of the type of figther he is (no power), but he still landed on him on several occasions. It's one thing to say "I told him to do this" but as a trainer, it is your job to ensure he actually carries it out when the fighter performs. In the small clip they showed of Ricky sparring on 24/7, he still looked like the same old Ricky. Its hard to believe that Mayweather Sr. deep down inside would have believed his own hype; I just believe he really underestimated Pacquiao, along with Ricky, and thought he would be able to get away with his flaws.
