Ok, he was doing rather good in YOUR opinion. Most people who actually saw the fight would beg to differ.
Interesting article on the matter. https://www.boxingoverbroadway.com/ali-vs-folley-another-phantom-punch/
He got paid for every fight. What are you talking about? He was fighting Ali on even terms. And he got caught. Folley went down a lot in his career and he got knocked out a half-dozen times by lesser men. Did you examine all those knockouts, too? Here's one against Doug Jones. Is this punch more ferocious than the ones Ali landed? Jones wasn't exactly a murderous puncher. And Folley's reaction isn't all that different. He was doing great against Ali, better than nearly all of Ali's title challengers before him. The fight was virtually even when Folley was stopped. This content is protected
How is that blog post interesting? He thinks Folley took a dive because "some of Ali's opponents got death threats?" Does he mean ONE opponent, Sonny Liston, in their rematch? And Folley looked subdued before the fight? Like all of Ali's opponents jumped around acting hysterical before the fights? Has he watched any boxing matches from the 1960s? Basically the only guy who jumped around and made noise before fights was Ali. What other heavyweights were known for jumping around acting wild during introductions and before the bell rang? Jesus. Enough.
IMO, very strange to even suggest the question. Folley couldn't take a punch on his best day, yet alone when he was an old man. That's why he adopted such a cautious style. Still I find him interesting to watch -- so smooth and well schooled, if a bit boring. What you see is what you get. He was what he was.
Ali was friends with Folley, & when he saw his young son crying after the fight he said something gracious about maybe it would have been different years before. Ali may well have coasted to spare Folley. That or IF Folley did not do everything he could to get up only to take more abuse & get KOed is not corruption. Folley praised Ali re: his shots not looking that hard, but they came often & very fast from impossible angles & fuzzed up your head... There was nothing wrong done in this fight.
That's more believable than a "dive". A dive implies Ali's camp literally arranged and scripted the ko and/or folleys camp met with gamblers and agreed to their terms. Folley quitting is definitely possible tho. But again I dont see why Ali would be worried about a past his prime fighter like folley to the point that theyd even consider rigging a match or why folley would get up and continue taking abuse if he were in on it. I have yet to see someone giving a logical reason for either scenario.
No he didn't dive .He was just overwhelmed by Ali's superior hand and foot work .As were many of Prime Ali's opposition .IMO .
