Frazier even visited Jerry's dressing room and comforted an inconsolable Quarry. He knew his career was over at that point. Joe's visit was a class act from a terrific guy. When he left the bimbo, who would cheat on and dump Jerry after his fame and money ran out, exclaimed: "I don't care what Ali says! That Joe Frazier is a class act!" She was actually right about that.[/QUOTE] Nice post, Thank you. Where did you hear about Frazier's locker room visit? I am also interested in hearing about those interactions.
Read jerry quarrys book!! ****ing sad read man, such a ****ing bright guy too!! Read thad spencers book too, another sad read too!
I do like Hookie's post, he's done his homework, must be an actual Boxing buff, Jerry could have had 3 movie sequeals off his real life, Jerry knockdown vs Patterson was highly suspect, watch it sometime, Jerry scored 4 knockdowns vs Floyd. Everytime JERRY hit the canvas he scored 10! he was 3-2-1 3 knockouts in the few bouts he was decked, whats Tyson?? 0-4?, 0-3? gotta o on it anyway. Foreman would have been at least 12-5 . Quarry wanted to fight Foreman MSG 1970, 1971 in London. aND ALL THRU 1972. Jerry deserved to be in there instead of Joe King Roman. (who saved Jerry Quarry's life in 1977 Alaska Tavern) that CLOSED CIRCUIT NIGHT Of SEP 1, 1973. Then we would have been talking about the result, George actually beat 4 ranked fighter's before he fought FRAZIER, Gregorio Peralta was ranked by WBA both fights, and George Chuvalo, Boone Kirkman was rated No.10 by Ring Magazine, Foreman was lucky he had a timid ref, in Mercante, otherwise he might very well have attained a DQ!! FOREMAN WAS NEVER TO GET KNOCKED OUT, Ali was the only one with that BLUEPRINT, however IT MAY HAVE BEEN George life demise had Quarry had him tuckered out in ROUND 8.
My advice would be, keep an open mind either way. Fighters sometimes make overblown compliments to contemporaries. On the other hand, the fighter who your ATG actually fears, is often the last guy that you would ever expect i.e. Louis Bettina.
Some white folks do have that bias. But you ironically make a stereotypical statement, some believe things based upon perceived evidence. I just saw you write twice in one brief post that Marciano had "no skills" This is an extreme & uninformed opinion. Great power, endurance & toughness are skills. As are his more subtle ways of getting inside, combining punches, leaning & slipping, feinting to set up things such as the overhand right... In fact it is so extreme to say any ATG or Rocky has no skills that combined with your racial comment-which must apply to some-it seems highly likely that you are yourself a racist. And thus readily both recognize it when it is there-& when it is not, project your own bigotry onto others. Forman was universally seen as crude, green, open, looping punches...Of course he had some skills beyond brute force, the jab, ring cutting..., If someone made equally disrespectful & inflammatory comments against Foreman, & "loled" about blacks hating to admit something, I would believe that they were a racist too.
This would be pretty short and painful to watch. Foreman would have made mince meat out of quarry , imo. As tough as jerry was, he would get butchered by foreman's jab and mauled by vicious uppercuts and hooks. He might last 4 or 5 rounds if he tried to box and move, but that's about it. I personally don't know why george would be afraid of quarry, i just think that perhaps he was a bit generous in his opinion of other fighters.
Foreman beat Norton,Frazier and Chuvalo which common, inside the distance victim do those three have?:think
I think Foreman (or his managers) did avoid Quarry. Styles make fights. Except Foreman was a pusher) so the fact that Quarry handled ALL of them would NOT make it worth the risk for Foreman to fight him. Frazier was just to active for a counterpuncher like Quarry. Ali to quick. While he was aggressive Foreman was not the non stop puncherFrazier was and obviously not like Ali. Foreman was slow. Ali himself said I could eat lunch between Foreman's punches! Quarry would have had time to counter. I am not saying Foreman could not have beaten Quarry, he might have. But if you look carefully at Foreman's record he was managed well. Unlike Frazier coming up, he managed to avoid Quary, Bonevena,Ellis, etc.. I think Foreman's mangers did not want to take risks and no question Quarry based on his record was a big risk.
