Taking a solid punch to the nose temporarily hinders your sense of smell somewhat, well if blood is coming out odours are not going to go in, however that definitely should only be used as a last resort.

God, imagine not showering like Marvin for months in training camp. Pushing yourself to the edge everyday smelling like Satans starfish. Working out upwards of 3 hours a day or however much and going to bed like that. I think this has to be its own feat of discipline. I doubt Marciano would run the miles he did if he never showered for months.

Definitely a last resort - I guess once you got into the ring with Galento you’d know for sure if allowing a free shot to the snout was worth it.

Come to think of it - Max Baer’s nose was bloody for the most part vs Galento - Max, more clever than we knew? I mean you could give yourself an uppercut in the dressing room to short circuit your sense of smell even before you get into the ring.

If I had the wares to do it I might be even more inclined to want to knock the dirty basterd out asap and then throw a bar of soap on top of his prone form.

This was something the excellent mixed martial artist Hellboy Hansen apparently did as well. You can imagine how much worse this would be if you were grappling with someone!
