Going head-to-head against Martinez-Chavez, in the same city? Of course, I'm not saying this all depends on ESB, but no one here is talking about Canelo-Lopez. No one knows who Josesito Lopez is while Arum has a pound-for-p0und ranked guy (technically not his fighter) and the son of a legend headlining this weekend. Is Canelo-Lopez gonna bomb?
No they didn't make a mistake - but they would have been better off with another date. This would have helped maximize their exposure. So far - it seems like they are doing well with Ticket Sales at 15,000 or so. On top of the fact that the fight will be on Showtime - will help as well. There will be a lot of people getting the PPV - but there will be far more people that don't. Leaving them avaliable to watch the Lopez/Canelo fight. I think Chavez Jr./Martinez will do better - mainly due to who they are and their position in the sport at this moment. Canelo is still building his name in America but doing a very good job of it with GBP. However - Lopez was basically unknown - until the Ortiz fight. Even with that being said - it's still a bad match up. Canelo is fighting a guy 2 divisions below him - so most people expect him to win - which leaves very little room for any excitement. Most people believe that Chavez/Martinez will be much more entertaining than the other fight. I'll be watching the Chavez Jr./Martinez fight - but I'll also be DVRing the other fight. At the end of the day - I think they both do good numbers at the gate. The PPV goes by BUYS - the Showtime fight will go by rating/views. I believe DVR still counts for the views.
I think Chavez/Martinez is going to do better than Alvarez/Lopez in terms of tickets sold, PPV buys and revuneue made. I think Golden Boy would have been smarter to chose a diffrent date.
Chavez/Martinez is just far more appealing than an easily predicted mismatch for Canelo against another blown up fighter. They probably messed up with the date but they screwed themselves with selecting yet another opponent not an 154 pd'er and has to move up two divisions. Wish the best to all 4 fighters though
IMO, the Canelos-Lopez fight and card for that matter will be much more entertaining, but the Martinez-Son of Legend JCC is more significant. It's not like the Canelo card is PPV.
