Leonard had haunted Hagler ever since he called that phoney 1st retirement in 82 when he humiliated & disrespected Marvin in front of the worlds media. Every fight Marvin would see Leonard at ringside passing commentary & teasing the Leonard loving media with hints of a comeback "Maybe"

He owned everything Marvin wanted most & that was respect & when Leonard disrespectfully challenged him after 5 years Hagler must have thought "You ******* you've come to steal everything i've worked so hard for" all my glory & hard earned respect of the boxing world. He wanted to show the world that he was the better boxer, the boxer of 82 & not just the Hearns destroying monster, everyone expected Marvin to bash Leonard up rapid & he'd get no credit for it, he wanted to show the world what would have happened on a fair & level playing field in 82. He commited the cardinal sin of allowing personalities to interfer with bizzness......:deal

RESPECT he wanted Leonards respect:verysad He should have just done a Hearns on him & wiped the **** out & laughed his way too the bank....anyway that my opinion why Marvin went about the way he did in those first 4 rounds. He should have been an ice cold killer, he should have told Leonard i'am not going to stop till you are brain damaged instead of poking his tongue out at him. Leonard must have known he'd hit the jackpot when Marvin came out boxing orthodox thinking he's being clever instead of jumping on him as he/we expected:-(

As far as the overwhelming majority of media and fans were concerned, Hagler was in a no-win situation. Leonard was shot, rusty, a welter, and damaged goods. He was still of course "Sugar Ray". It was considered a mismatch extravaganza. A big-money ritual sacrifice.
I fail to see how Hagler could have CALCULATED that "outboxing" this over-matched has-been would have earned him more respect than getting rid of him quick.

    Still, it's plausible.

The majority of scribes back in 82 said Leonard would outbox Hagler, just another grain of sand to add on to the granite chip on Marvin's shoulders.

    IMO smart against Duran.
Duran came in top shape, which was rare. Hagler was boxing him to a close decision. Trust me, Hagler got inside 2-3 rounds earlier, Duran would have won the fight and the undisputed middleweight title.

Sounds as dependable as the guy who says, "My barber's cousin's brother's dry cleaner told me...

Only on the scorecards was this fight close. Duran didn't win more than 4 rounds on my scorecards (apart from a few other even rounds, Hagler dominated the fight in my opinion).

Marvin didn't carry any of them, but he was mentally handicapped from doing what he could have done in the Duran and Leonard fight by his lack of total assertiveness.

You DEFINITELY need to go to Specsavers.:rofl

As to the thread. I think it is pure sh&t to question the integrity of a guy as honourable as Marvin Hagler.

I don't think it was in Hagler's nature to carry people. He'd have to pretty much have a gun pointed at him to do it. As mentally tough as Marvin was though, I think little bits of insecurity appeared in his head when Duran and Leonard came along, as they were legends and psych-artists to some degree. Hearns didn't try to psych people...he just tried to flatten them. That was Marvin's language too, and it was easy for him to understand, so he responded in kind. I think Hagler could have knocked out Duran if he'd showed him less respect, and I think he did beat Leonard but could have beaten him very decisively if little doubts weren't in the back of his head.

I don't even give Duran 4 rds. He's good at frustrating Hagler, but doesn't really do much offensively. And you don't win rounds on only making the other guy look somewhat bad. Does my head in that some see this as a close fight, or even Duran winning. :huh

A dirty little rumor, circa 1993.

George Foreman had a 30% interest in Tommy Morrison's contract. ;)
