At that level, Monzon and Hagler, it's all aesthetics, that's all. I prefer Monzon's jab for one....he had a very effective, long jab that set up the right hand, as well as it functioning as a "**** off" type of weapon. Monzon, unlike Hagler, never displayed confusion or lack of purpose, as happened with Marvin vs both Duran and Leonard...and that is attributed to superior ring generalship....knowing just when to resort to the jab, and when to lay back and when to tie up and frustrate an opponent. Neither Monzon's or Hagler's jabs were as fast, artistic or again, as aesthetically pleasing as say, Ali's, Holmes' or as destructive as Liston's, or Louis's, but they both had very functional jabs, that helped to set up their individual mode of attack.

Perhaps the frustration/confusion from Hagler was because Leonard and Duran were both ATGs and could make a tough fight against anyone, regardless of the weight. They saw certain openings & flaws in Hagler's game and capitalized. Monzon never fought any ATGs with that level of boxing IQ or skills. That's just my opinion. Past prime versions of Napoles, Griffith and Benvenuti were all great fighters but probably not on the level of Duran or Leonard.

Hagler very rarely even used a jab.Don't believe the hipster revisionists that suggest otherwise...watch the fights.

LMAO Napoles Benvenuti and Griffith were far closer to their primes than Leonard and Duran were. Nino and Griffith were far more accomplished at the weight too.

We also saw a young Hagler get beaten from the outside by taller guys like Watts, Monroe and Seales.

Duran had no business pushing Hagler like that, as Marvin held all the cards insofar as physical advantages go...and a past prime version of SRL flummoxed him more than his fans will let on to,...though oddly enough, I think their fight was a draw. Point is that neither man was as full fledged a middleweight as Hagler was. Further more, I think that there's a great deal of debate as to whether Griffith (a painfully underrated ring IQ he had), Napoles and Benvenuti were truly "past prime". I was around back in '74 and remember very well how vaunted Napoles was in the eyes of the boxing experts and writers, and they were in the majority pegging Mantequilla as the better man, predicting his victory over a great champion who was as underestimated back then as he is today. And as for Benvenuti, he reversed his poor showing against both Doyle Baird and Tom Bethea by knockouts, and along with his 1 punch ko of Luis Rodriguez, seemed to have rediscovered his power, and was thought to be on a resurgence as middleweight champion and looking more solid.
You're one of my favorite posters Tommygun, and you can put forth a compelling argument, but i think we'll just have to agree to disagree on the matter of Monzon/Hagler

Yeah they were but they weren't great fighters like leonard and duran were and didn't have the ring IQ that they did.

He wasn't prime against those 3. that was way before his prime.

That is a joke right? Napoles right IQ was as good if not better than either Leonard or Duran. And Nino and Griffith were much closer to their prime and better middleweights than Leonard or Duran

It was before his prime and he avenged those loses but they were mediocre fighters who gave Hagler problems purely based on size and style.

We did? that's interesting. How would you know Hagler was beat from the outside by Monroe and Seales?

No film exists of Hagler-Monroe 1 :patsch

and Hagler never lost to Seales :rofl

Monzon's jab was not the equal of Hagler's. Hagler's jab snaps back heads and could bust you up like he did Sibson in round five. those three consec jabs hastened his fall

hagler's jab opened cuts on Hamsho's face

and put Lee on ***** street with an audible thud

same with Hamani by a jab to the forehead

I've concluded that Bundiniblack saw little of Hagler, he says Hagler's left is his bread and butter punch when it's really right hand

By all accounts the Monroe and Seales fights mirrored the Watts fight with Hagler having trouble closing the distance. Someone with an ATG jab usually doesn't have that problem even when their young.

Even though Hagler did have an ATG Jab, this statement sums up Hagler's problem as a fighter.

by ALL accounts? Whose account? I don't see why you can't name your sources instead of referring to "all accounts"

name these accounts. I want to see who these people are by name and the publication they write for

In fact, I have some doubts as to how much you've seen of Hagler with you not being aware that most of his power is in is right hand. You said it was his left when you compared him to Briscoe

The Seales fight was a draw and lost an earlier fight on points to Hagler in addition to a another loss in their third fight. no evidence of Hagler's incompetence

Yet YOU said we saw Hagler beat from the outside by Seales - which cast more doubt on you as a witness

and from the accounts I've read (no video was taken of Monroe-hagler 1), Hagler was outpunched, and not noting details of the fight, only that he lost by a wide margin and from what I saw in the Watts fight, Marvin had no problems getting inside, but was met punch for punch.

You really expect anyone to chastise Hagler becuz he got no better than a draw in his second year as a pro and third year when he's not even ranked, going up against two top ranked contenders?

you came in here acting like you knew all about Hagler, then claiming if his jab didnt rank with Winky Wright's, they didnt know anything about boxing, and if his jab isnt on par with his, then it's not an atg jab

First of all, NO ONE agrees with you which means that you are in the minority and second, when has Winky Wright's jab been responsible for 55 stitches in a top ranked contenders face?

Hagler's jab BLOWS that little man's jab away by light years

before you make any further comments on Hagler I suggest you watch film on his first
