Did Hatton fulfill his ability or did ***** waste his talent on pointless WBU fights?

Mate he was a 2 weight world champion, had massive fights in Vegas, fought the 2 best fighters of his generation and has a legitimate claim at being the most popular british boxer of all time.

He didn't waste anything.

 

He threw away what could have been an ATG career......he gave it up for gluttony, alcoholism and sloth.

 

Ricky Hatton absolutely did not fail to fulfil his potential.

He had a great career that can not be considered anything other than a huge success.

I think the WBU title fights were what Sky wanted; it was very much at the time when Sky felt the only way to sell a fight was with a 'world title' on the line, usually WBU, WBF and IBO.

I just don't think they were that interested in the 'traditional' route for Ricky.

He probably wasted 6-12 months of his prime on the WBU title but I wouldn't say he underachieved in his career generally.

He beat a old semi retired Tszyu by cheating, that is his only good win. His best accomplishments are beer drinking and buffet eating between fights.

 

With his style, your never going to have the longest career. He fought everyone, won plenty of straps. Would like to have seen him fight Floyd at LW aroun 2006 in England though ......with Smooger as ref

i remember him fighting and then 2 WEEKS after u could see the rolls of fat appearing already, and towards the end when he was 3 months out of a fight he literally looked so fat he looked ill, how the **** did his wife allow him to get in that sort of shape? he had acne and everything, i would ****ing leave if my husband got that fat so quickly - like his hands ballooned up to twice the size of what they were and then he would still look ill at the weigh in

maybe it was OK early in his career when he was fighting every two months so the damage was limited as he only had 2 weeks max to **** himself up, but even 3 fights a year isnt enough when that **** piles on the pies in a few days

 

It couldn't have gone better for him. Hatton was wise not to step up earlier and perhaps face earlier, brutal losses to the likes of Cotto and Floyd. Perhaps stepping up in weight earlier to take his career in another direction and facing further brutalisation in a weight class that he simply couldn't handle at any point in his life.

There was progression in his career, legacy defining fights and riches. At his best he lost to the 2 best fighters of our era and his last fight will be viewed as a man who couldn't accept his time had passed.

Even when Pac brutalised him and he retired, had he stuck around and had to contend with hungry talented fighters like Alexander, Bradley, Khan, Berto, Ortiz, Cotto etc around 140-147 then he would have likely faced more losses and pain.

I don't think it could have gone any better.
