did hearns v mccallum ever come close to happening?

I thought McCallum & Hearns were both Kronk fighters.

 

McCallum changed managers and trainers on several occasions throughout his career. Around the time he KO'd Donald Curry in 1987, he was with the Duva family.

 

Now that you mention it, I recall McCallum getting in Manny Stewards face a little after he stopped Milt McCrory so apparently the parting wasn't amicable.

 

Kalambay and Barkley more or less put an end to this matchup.

 

incidentally, just of curiosity, were McCallums fights against Graham, Watson and the Kalambay rematch independently broadcast in America?.I've only came across the Brit versions of these fights.

I thought McCallum was the number 1 contender for Hearns title at 154lbs but Tommy chose to fight Duran which meant more £. It was over this that Mike fell out with Manny. Also Manny said the best gym wars he seen where when Tommy and Mike sparred would have been a quality fight.

By the way i was giving this match-up a lot of thought today, just a co-incidence it's on here now, but i think Hearns would have won from recent thought anyway.

This is 1 of the most interesting greatest match ups to never happen

 

Hearns/McCallum was on the radar twice; first time it was the reason Duran was stripped (not fighting the Bodysnatcher) of his title shortly before the Hearns fight. Some thought the Motor City Cobra should of fought McCallum at 154, but money probably rightly persuaded Tommy to the allure of a Hagler bout.

Then in 89 there was a lot of talk of a McCallum/Hearns but Tommy wanted revenge over a certain Ray Charles Leonard......

I just think the fight was destined not to happen.

I'm knocked sick that this could have happened, its not like Duran-Whittaker who fought in different time frames at the weight in which many, MANY consider them the finest head to head ever. Thomas Hearns and Mike McCallum could have faced off at 154 pounds, and you guys are telling me it nearly/might have happened??????????
