I think the Calzaghe loss is what fueled hopkins into fighting the way he did against Pavlik. He now sees that you can't win fights by making people look bad, activity is a issue too. After the taylor fights he wasn't sold. He went on and beat tarver and winky. he loses to calzaghe for the same reasons he loses to Taylor - it could have been prevented. The calzaghe lost was a great thing for hopkins, it was a reality check. He wont fight that way ever again,IMO!
In an interview Thursday on Setanta Sports News Bernie said that he fought the right fight but he was beaten by the judges. No regret whatsoever for the tactics he employed.
It's very difficult to make your thing and dictate the pace against Calzaghe since you have to be more active and work harder than Calzaghe and that should be close to impossible in Bernard's case. Bernard did well to let he come and open up, getting careless to start with but he payed the ultimate price for not having anything else in mind but to catch him with a counter shot all fight long. I do agree that the Calzaghe fight prepared the Old Fox for this memorable win against a beast like Kelly tho.
Hopkins just simply didnt throw enough punches, five or ten more here or there he would have won the fight, although many think he won anyways.
I think Hopkins have a bad night against Calzaghe. If he can have the energy like he had in Pavlik fight, he could out point Calzaghe.
hopkins has fought like he did vs joe c the tarver fight then the winky fight then both taylor fights...he changed his style because he knew he could exploit KP's style...u can't fight calzaghe like that..he is the complete opposite of KP, good balance and footwork, light blazing fast punches and great lateral movement, hopkins would be punching air the whole time...he did his best and had a good gameplan vs calzaghe...sometime u just have to give JC credit like everyone is giving BHOP credit for his pavlik destruction...if he fights like he did against pavlik he will lose by a wider margin vs calzaghe
It takes two to tango...JC won that fight fair and square and I have no rooting interest in the fight...everyone kills pavlik for having the excuse of being sick so dont make excuses for bhop...if he looked like he did vs pavlik every fight he would be the GOAT...unfortuantely not all fighters are pavlik
There is nothing B-Hop could have done. He made it as close as possible. If he would have opened up, it would have gotten really ugly for him. It is no big deal, but JC's style is all wrong for him.
like I said I am totally neutral..well ok I wanted calzaghe to win (I am american too) but BHOP fans now assume he beats JC easy and JC fans take credit for someone elses win...the bottom line is gthe fight was there to be won fr BHOP..he had him down he won a couple (at most 3 rds) and it came down to who wanted it more and who was willing to get after it enough to get the dec and clearly it was calzaghe down the stretch
Hopkins fought the best fight he could, he sat back an countered calzaghe, an joe changed up, hopkins at this point had no answer, an for people to say bernard should of threw more punches, he would got hit more, when hopkins attacked that when joe landed some of his best punches,,,,,hopkins did another smart thing in that fight, he faked a low blow or at least played it up,,,,hopkins was running like crazy, he was beaten at that time, an out of energy, guess what, he got his breath an legs back, an he was able to hear the score cards,,, an he lost,,,,an for that lady to give him the fight, must of been blind, i mean how much does one have to run an get hit to lose a fight. an if those punches didn't mean anything, we wouldn't of seen hopkins play up his low blow, what he should of played up is calzahe doggie styled him in front of millions:tdh
B-Hop had the right gameplan against JC, but is just too old to keep up a high enough workrate. Calzaghe does best against fighters who come to him.
yup, if he opens up it does get ugly...way too much movement and handspeed..BHOP is obviously well conditioned and very tough so props to calzaghe for not letting him get off
how do judges get away with that ****...how can it be considered a split...for **** sakes nate campbell over juan diaz was a split...the fight was a demolition for campbell and PBF ODH was a split and while the figh was close there is NO WAY ODH won 7 rds...I watched that with 13 people 10 of who wanted ODH to win and all 10 said mayweather won...Calzaghe won at least 9 rds...judges should get fired...they are ruining the sport
