Yes he clearly was, and had to try and cheat his way out of it.

I'm just repeating what some have said to make a point. I saw no "mauling" of Hopkins.

Nah, you're just splitting hairs, again. You're needing to clarify your own definition of "mauling" - why? Because the disparity here is paper thin and completely ****ing subjective, and you goddamn well know it. I didn't see Calzaghe landing much either, and I had Hopkins winning that fight, but mauling someone doesn't mean landing punches does it???

Yes he was. He practically gave up in the final round cause he was spent.

Well, I have never seen the last definition used, but I suppose "to handle roughly" MIGHT apply. But the definitions are given in order of most used. BEAT, BRUISE, MANGLE?

Main Entry: 2maul Function:transitive verb Date:13th century 1 : beat, bruise 2 : mangle 1 3 : to handle roughly

If you had Hopkins winning the fight I find this a strange use of the word myself. To most, like myself, it implies Joe did more damage to Bhop than he did. To most of us it conjurs up images of a one sided affair.

It had nothing to do with Calzaghe ?

Didn't he gas and lose to Winky and Tarver too.

He didn't?

You sure ?

Well, were age and weight (weight ??? WTF???) factors in Kessler and Lacy 'gassing out' too ?

Both those lads were almost thirty, weren't they ?

So, Calzaghe had nothing to do with any of those lads losing ?

Well, glad you cleared that up for me.

Ok, so you conceed that usage probably applies... Great, I've made my point. So glad you singled out one ****ing word in my post. That's why I come to a boxing forum. To get nitpicked about nonsense that has nothing to do with the sport by people who were wrong in the first place... You also "find it strange" that I would use this word, and had Hopkins winning the fight?? This has been educational, eh? People are different, incredible isn't it? This has been fun, thanks. :dead

it is possible to think he gassed but still think he won i just thought there was no way in hell joe did enough in the early rounds in terms of clean effective punching to justify winning them and the fight. I didn't see joe properly take over until round 8 or 9 in rounds 1 through 7 all the clean punches belonged to bernard and he dictated the tempo

Exactly! When I'm 43, if I'm in as good a shape as Bernard, I won't mind gassing. For his age, I don't think there's a fitter person on earth, let alone in sport!

We will be saying this for years to come because Barnard will kepp himself in great shape until he no longer can physically do it.

More importantly:

Hopkins lost every round (maybe except for the one where he got the fluke KD), so gas or not would have made no difference. And this is how it would also have been scored if it had been in Cardiff with the crowd booing and cheering at the 'right times' (for Joe).

Everybody knows that Bernard was breathing deep/hard in between rounds against Tarver and Winky. Freddie Roach and Nazeem told him time and time again to take his time, feint and relax, Harold Lederman thought that Bernard's mouth was hanging open... So and knowing that Joe Calzaghe fights three full minute rounds, what did anyone expect to happen? Joe Calzaghe to get hurt early or Bernard to gas out late... Very simple in fact and that's what came to happen.

Hi, whilst being an ardent Joe C fan I do not think this was Joe's finest hour. He even admitted this on the Jonathan Ross show (UK chat show - our answer to David Letterman/Leno but not as good).

However, I do agree with the statement that B-Hop did gas. Evidence includes:

(1) The regular pit stops he took feigning low blow injuries so as to get his breath back.
(2) The fact that at the end of some rounds he walked back to the wrong corner. This is not the actions of a man who is not exhausted.
(3) The fact that he did not hit Joe with any telling punches other than in the first round which I admit WAS a good round for B-Hop.
(4) Joe hit him with more punches than ANY fighter including RJJ accoring to compubox. A non tired B-Hop would never let this happen.

Had the fight taken place in 1998 I think (even being a Joe fan) would have been a lot closer as B-Hop had such an awkward style for someone like Joe.

Finally, please visit the Joe Calzaghe fansite I am working on as a hobby at the moment. The address is www.calzaghe-fight-news.com and contains images, video & news articles related to Joe's upcoming bout with Roy Jones Junior on November 8th. Thanks!! Gareth (UK)

He was exhausted, the guy is 43, fighting Calzaghe about hu it was being said will throw 90+ punches per round this fight.

Split Decision. doesnt mean it was an easy win, so a tired 43 Hopkins did well.
