On the Ike vLyle thread," Dago Wop " states Ike got a "gift stoppage" against Chris Byrd that's his prerogative . I think the stoppage was justified judging by Byrd's reaction to the punches and the fact that he was not throwing punches back. I'm curious as to what the Forums opinions are on this . Here is the stoppage below ,what do you think, who is right ,who is wrong? This content is protected
Byrd wasnt that upset. Especially nowadays he admits he thought the bell had already rung when he got knocked down which was why he was complaining while ike was hitting him, when " really it was Ike ringing my bell". So nowadays he admits he was completely out of it
I love when Byrd gets knocked down, he gets up but out on his feet, with drool coming out of his mouth and he starts arguing with the referee, like it was the ref's fault for the shot that almost decapitated him.
Excellent stoppage. He actually semi turned away from Ike right at the end while the barrage was continuing. Byrd thinking the bell had already rung makes sense of it.
Byrd talks about the fight in this April 2016 interview. “The shot he caught me with; any other heavyweight would have gone down. I give him credit but it was something I worried about my whole career. I was a little guy and with these bigger guys they hit unbelievably hard and throw massive shots.” “I was still avoided after Ike beat me though" No mention from Byrd of the fight being stopped prematurely. The commentators for the fight were Larry Merchant,Jim Lampley, and Roy Jones Jnr. When Byrd arises from the first knockdown Roy Jones can be heard saying. "He's hurt very bad.He doesn't know where he is right now.Hurt bad!" With just under a minute remaining in the round, Ibeabuchi had again backed Byrd against the ropes. As the two traded at close quarters, Ibeabuchi launched a powerful, sweeping left hook, almost in the form of an uppercut. The punch landed flush, and hard, sending Byrd’s head snapping back while simultaneously rolling on his shoulders. The blast flung sweat into the laps of ringside spectators as Lampley moaned, “Oh what a left hand! Byrd in serious trouble! Ibeabuchi with a monster left hook!” Byrd crashed in a heap to the canvas. Ever the warrior, Byrd climbed to his feet, hopping up and down trying to clear his head while taking the standing eight count from Rall. The action resumed with just under 30 seconds remaining in the round. This content is protected Ibeabuchi immediately attacked Byrd again sending him crumbling to the canvas. Jones saw Byrd was in trouble, “He’s hurt very bad. He doesn’t even know where he is right now! Hurt bad.” Byrd climbed to his feet for a second time. Still hurt from the initial knockdown and the brutal left that put him there, Byrd had just 15 seconds to kill before the bell would end the round. It wasn’t to be as The President again jumped all over him, pounding away with dynamite lefts and rights. Rall leaped in to halt the action. The bout was stopped at 2:59 of Round 5. It was a spectacular TKO win for Ibeabuchi. Byrd, perhaps punched silly, tried to argue the knockdowns and stoppage to no avail. This was Ibeabuchi’s last fight. Legal troubles landed the rising star behind bars for 15 years. Having been released in November of 2015, rumors are now swirling that Ibeabuchi, 42, is looking to make a comeback. Byrd would fight another 10 years, earning wins over Vitali Klitschko and Evander Holyfield, winning the vacant IBF Heavyweight crown in the process. His career ended with 41 wins and 5 losses.
I've seen this fight a couple of time's now .And always been of the opinion that Byrd was really dazed and stunned. I couldn't argue ,from what I've seen , that Ibeabuchi got a gift or anything like it .No way. Stopped at the right time .
Watched this fight recently. By the end, Byrd was looking at the ref, shouting something. He wasn't looking at his opponent or defending himself. Whether he was still protesting at the call of the second knockdown, or if he was complaining that he thought the round had ended, he should have kept his hands up and shot a token jab back if he didn't want the ref to step in. A fair and decent stoppage, I think.
Fine stoppage, Byrd boxed pretty well against Ike, but got caught and he was really hurt when referee stopped the fight.
Some refs probably would have let it go on a bit longer but it was a completely fine, sensible stoppage. Anyone who would call that a "gift" probably has some kind of agenda.
Perfectly legit stoppage, indeed. Still doesn't make Ike a near top ten ATG, though, as some would have you believe.
Nothing wrong with the stoppage. Byrd was in big trouble Ike was about to decapitate him and the ref knew it, hes the one who was right there in the middle of the action and made a good call imo.
