Did Joe Frazier ever attend a fight after he retired?

I saw Joe at a Tyson fight in Atlantic City in 1986.

 

Philadelphia should have granted landmark status to that gym. After all, the city was Smokin Joe's adopted home and he trained many of its youths in boxing. He was a model citizen and was beloved by those who worked with him. Sadly, he lost much of his money in some rather poor investments his net worth was not as high as it should have been when he died.

 

I didn't know about his money situation. You are right, Joe was a very good man.

 

Wasn't he the original Clubber Lang?

 

Nah, not sure how that got started.

Joe was from Philly.

Clubber was from the Southside of Chicago.

 

He allegedly auditioned for the Clubber Lang role before Mr. T but ultimately lost the role due to hurting Stallone in sparring. Sly wanted to cast a real fighter for authenticity and Joe also really wanted the part.

I think Stallone had him in mind to play Clubber but Joe couldn't remember his lines. Something like that. Unless that's just an urban legend but it would be interesting since Joe played himself in Part 1.
