1. Joe Gans: “The Old Master” fought from 1893 to 1909 and is credited by most with inventing the jab. He developed the art of using it both defensively, to disrupt his opponents attack, or on the offense, to force a retreat or set up his dangerous right hand. Gans was rated No.1 in a list of the Top 12 fighters with the best jab, was there anyone that ever jabbed better than Gans in any weight class?
Who are you quoting as to their thinking he invented the jab and which list among any dozens of others is this one from? You said he was credited by "most", in half a century of reading most everything on the sport I've never come across one respected historian saying this. As for his jab I once read Joe's own statement, that he practiced slamming his front foot down when landing it to give it extra power.

Gans invented the jab, I thought Corbett claimed that? Either way it's bull****, manuels from before either were born describe the jab as being the most common punch, and Jem Mace who well predates them saw it as key, and generally taught his boxers to be great jabbers.
Hang on, number 10 is Corbett, who won the Heavyweight title in 1892, yet Gans, whos first known pro fight was in 1893, invented the jab. I don't even think it's bad list, and to be fair, they do say he's creditted with it, not that he actually did it. But it's still just absurd.
Fun fact. Jack Randall is also credited with inventing the 1-2. He boxed from 1815-1822, meaning the jab-cross was invented about 70 years before the jab. (That also means, contrary to popular belief, combos existed long before the 1920's, or whenever people claim they were invented) (I'm not saying I accept he actually invented it, just that claim being made means it existed back then)
We’ll cross trainer told me about how Ali invented the fist, so I am inclined to agree with you....Little Joe Gans peppering people with his little flailing stumps....I just don’t see it
Honestly, what do people think fighters threw in the oldschool days? Apparently the jab, nor any combinations existed. I guess all fighting was just a wild, haymaker windmill
Don't know how you could compare Joe Gans' jab with someone like Joe Louis or Sonny Liston who put their whole bodies behind their jabs. I presume some of the mega-heavyweights of recent years had similar force. Among lighter weight fighters, trainer Lou Gross always said Willie Joyce had an awesome jab. I watched George Benton vs. Allen Thomas last night. Great jab. The jab is a key part of almost every fighter's arsenal. Every good fighter in history had a good jab. How can you say that one fighter had the best? It's really a stretch to even post the question. Even Rocky Marciano had a good jab. See his fight against Harry (Kid) Matthews. Rocky sets him up for the knockout with the jab. His arms were too short for his jab to be dominant, but he damn well knew how to do it.
I wasn`t saying Gan`s had the best jab, I just thought it would start a good, interesting debate, and from the answers I`ve already disovered stuff I`d never heard before.
