Warren and Bob Arum had lenghty conversations about Calzaghe - Pavlik, and it was really starting to look like it was going to happen. Was Warren pushing for that fight what ended up splitting them?
from what calzaghe said, it seems like it. i'm a little suprised, though. i figured warren would have no problem with calzaghe fighting jones. easier fight and bigger payday than pavlik.
I think Arum convinced Warren, and then he was suprised by Joe's decision. To be honest, I can't blame Joe, who wouldn't want a bigger payday with less risk of losing his "0" and less chance of getting KO'd. He does deserve a money fight, he has been a great champion for over a decade.
They split because the contract had ended and Calzaghe knew that signing with Warren again would guarantee UK PPV revenues of zero pounds from his remaining fight(s). Calzaghe has seen what Hatton has done on PPV in the UK and would like them to be higher than zero pounds.
A few people have said this but I don't really underant it. Does Warren not do PPV fights or something?
No, Warren has an exclusive deal with Setanta Sports until 2010 for all his fights to be on that channel. Edit: all his fighters except Amir Khan, who had a pre-existing deal with ITV, though I believe the Gomez fight was the last in that deal.
See the bold print: Personally I was absolutley shocked be Joe's decision, and I've been truly disgusted by all the absolute bull**** he has talked since making it!
Well if thats the case then its no brainer in terms of $$$$ why he split from him. **** if I was as big as Joe then I'd be wanting the PPV money too. That doesn't excuse him from not taking the Pavlik fight. The bull**** thing is that it doesn't look like it was PPV money that made them split cause if that was the case Joe would have split from Warren well before this. It wasn't until Arum and Warren came up with a Kelly Pavlik fight that he decided to jump ship. Of course if Joe was dead set against the KP fight theres no reason that I can see why Frank wouldn't have gone along with that option. Its not like that fight's going to be a bust finacially. Something else must have happened here.
I understand what Joe is doing in makin the most money, but honestly a fight with Jones will not improve his historical standing even if hes undefeated. He should be fighting the best and brightest. Beating fighters that will continue fighting and that will be getting better is the best way to enhance ones legacy. Calzaghe in my eyes barely beat hops (114-113, 115 - 113 if not for the knock-down,) really by not that much! In my eyes, although it might be bias, Pavlik punishes Calzaghe through 9 rounds until Joe either gets Knocked out or his corner stops it! Calzaghe still hasnt shown weather if its all smoke and mirrors or if hes really legit!
He was contracted to Warren previously, that contract has now expired. Calzaghe chose not to sign another contract with Warren.
Pavlik does as much for Calzaghe's historical standing as Jeff Lacy did ..Pavlik has only 2 big wins really 3 but the other opponent is Miranda who he himself is turning into a journey men ..Joe has showed how legit he was at super middle ..When Kelly can get past 10 title defenses then put the 2 in the same breath ..As it stands Pavlik has no history to speak of ..Joe does !
Kelly has bigger wins than Lacy had when he fought Calzaghe. Of course Pavlik doesn't yave the resume of Joe, but who does, that doesn't mean it wouldn't be a good fight.
Do you think this is the reason for the split though? For me its just simply the fact that joe wants more money when he fights jones. Jones and Joe will make a lot more from the fight now they are promoter free, they are big enough names to make a lot of money for the fight. I dont for one second believe that warren has pushed for joe to fight pav, its less money all round. Warren couldnt care less who joe fights as long as he gets paid. The very unlikely scenario some are suggesting is the following between FW and JC. FW: Joe we need to take the pavlik fight instead of jones, it could be better for you legacy wise. Think of your status as HOF fighter and think of the true boxing fans. JC: Frank its my last fight, I want to be paid as much as possible and thats Jones. When I beat Pavlik, I will get no credit like when I beat Lacy. If I have RJJ on my cv its a better bigger name. FW: Joe you know I am a man of principle, I only promote for the fans. Its Pavlik or nothing, I will take a stand on principle and not promote any more of your fights if you refuse Pavlik. Sure its less money and potentially more risk but its what I want. JC: Go **** yourself Frank. I am taking the money and I might beat Pavlik next for another payday.
