I had thought that he was primarily a bare knuckle fighter, but another poster said that he preferred to wear gloves and that most of his fights were with gloves. I have been able to find very little on this question. I do know that the Corbett fight was fought with gloves, and the Kilrain fight was fought under London Prize Ring rules (bare knuckle). Hopefully others can throw more light on the matter.
He had three fights with bare knuckles, and over a hundred with gloves. He was undoubtedly a gloved fighter first and foremost.
What were the gloves like back then? Was there any padding, or were they more just like leather gloves that you'd wear in cold weather?
This being a transitional era, there was a veritable array of glove types being used. Sullivan at various times used everything from 2oz leather gloves to 8oz horse hair gloves.
