Johnny Nelson pull out of a fight with Enzo Maccaranelli on a number of times then tamely retire giving up his belt with a convient injury. Then when Haye brushed aside Enzo easily Nelson talks of coming back. Did Johnny Nelson ever have any intention of fighting Enzo Maccarenelli?

I have had a similar feeling since he retired.

Although i believe Nelson would have beaten Enzo at that time, i believe he didnt want a hard fight at the late stage of his career that he was in.

Although i like Nelson he should have given a rematch to Guillermo Jones

I believe he did duck Big Mac. But after seeing Enzo demolished by Haye he probably thinks with hindsight that he could have beaten Enzo.

Johnny had a long career - I think he was entitled to retire gracefully

True, which is why is remarks after Haye V Macca were a bit silly.

What a load of crap. Johnny retired with a career injury. Firstly he injured his back and then his knee very badly which required months of rehab. He was also fast approaching 40 and after a long and storied career decided to succumb to the injuries and call it a day.

This is a guy who spent his career travelling to the lions den to face ANYBODY. Even in the final stages of his career when he was fighting sporadically he stood a young and undefeated Petkovic on his head and did the same with the big german Rudiger May and you actually think he ducked Enzo? If i was you id watch a few more of Johnnys fights.

I don't think he fancied the job. He looked terrible against Cantatore and maybe he overestimated Enzo. Having seen Haye V Enzo i think it's fair to say Nelson in his prime could have schooled Enzo, if he could stay away from his power.

Now I may be completely wrong here, but wasn't Jones the guy who failed a drugs test after getting jobbed against Nelson, if not can anyone remember who it was?

Yes Guillermo Jones he tested positive some time after fight. Was it any wonder though. The guy was 6ft 4 turned pro at welter and then miraculously later in his career developed into a fat cruiser weight. I believe he tested positive after the Nelson fight though. When they fought that fight was a farce. It was the worst affair iv ever seen. Johnny was extremely negative and very fortunate to scrape the home town decision.

    I dont know:huh

    I cant recall hearing that:huh

But if he didnt take anything he deserved a rematch, but he has since gone on to record some very good wins.

If he did take something he didnt deserve the rematch

I believe Johnny Nelson did duck Enzo because even if his retirement injury was geniune (which I have my doubts) he had from 2002 when Enzo became WBU Champion all that time Enzo was begging for the fight and he always stalled it. Somebody said it is rubbish that he ducked Enzo cos he would fight anyone but I disagree his time as WBO Cruiserweight Champion was padded out with easy rountine defences picking up easy paydays. Never once in that time did he push to make unification fights or fight the other top men out there to see who was the best like James Toney, O Neil 'Give Em Hell' Bell, Wayne Braithwaite, Vassiliy Jirov. Nelson was a paper champion. I remeber when he posed with Enzo for their upcoming fight he had this stupid insincere look on his face which said in hindsight - I'm not really going to go through with this. His retirement was not gracious he retired ducking someone he said he would take out in three rounds easy. What a fraudster.

Yeah I remember reading in Boxing News a few years back that he failed a test now that I think of it. Also see Scurla's post.

Well he didnt deserve the rematch, it was a horrible fight anyways. More Nelsons fault than Jones's though.
