Did Kevin Rooney steal a handshake from Ali in 1988?

  1. Yes Rooney without a doubt swooped in for the hand shake.

I just chopped this video .lol

    Here is the break down.
Ali lost to Holmes so when Tyson fought Holmes in 1988 Ali stepped into the Ring and said to Mike "Get him for me"!
Ali uses both hands to shake Mike Tysons glove then as Ali is walking away with his right hand floating down Rooney snags his hand and shakes it.
It looks awkward when Ali is walking away from him and eventually turns his back on Rooney as Kevin holds onto his hand.
Was that hand shake organic with Ali and Rooney or did Rooney steal Tyson and Ali's moment?
    Thought's?

Nah, seems Ali had his hand out ready for another possible handshake - Rooney puts his hand forward and Ali accommodates him.

However, I never noticed that ghostly apparition standing behind Rooney before. What the, or who the hell was that? Now you've given me chills my friend. Perhaps a 3rd voting option is in order - can anyone see a ghost like me?

It always amazes me seeing 2 generational talents from different eras sharing the same platform even if they're there just to talk, particularly in boxing. This is what Joshua needs IMO. That might fire him up again to have someone like Tyson, Lewis, Holyfield, etc. walk in the ring to have a quick pep talk with him.

On thread, nah, Ali definitely meant to shake his hand as he still had it up as he was walking past Rooney. On top of that I think it would be out of character for Ali not to do it. He was a trash talker in the ring, but from what I've researched on he was nice/respectful outside the ring. If you shake the boxers hand and his trainer is right there, why not shake his hand too considering he's the main driving force behind getting the boxer to be as good as he is?

I saw it too. It looked like a patch of mist moving behind him. It could've been a ghost for we know haha. Maybe it wanted a handshake too?

Bringing former greats into the ring is terrific and should be done more often.

Prior to first bell for Liston vs Bethea, none other than Joe Louis and the two Baer bros came into the ring to wish both fighters well and shake hands (available on YTube).

Maxie and Buddy were clowning it, assisting Louis across the ring as if he was an old man. Lol.

And, quite a thing to see that the new beast on the HW block, Liston, didn’t look so big next to the likes of Joe and Max.

Of course, near 6’7” Buddy dwarfed them all, including his older bro.

I loved the respect between Mike and Ali. Ali was no fool, I’m sure he knew exactly how good Mike was and that it would be no picnic at all fighting him.

PS - I’m glad you saw it too - lest anyone think I’m going nuts. :D

Just watched the start with the Baer brothers and Louis. Lol
And how old would Joe have been there, around an ancient 44!

Yeah, I don’t want to the instigator of mass hysteria but maybe it’s only just a chosen few - or should I say a “gifted” few - like ourselves who can see it. :D

Yes, Joe wasn’t old but poor Maxie looked somewhat beyond his own 49 years - sadly passing in the following year

I don’t know if you noticed but I’m assuming the clip you viewed was the one uploaded by Matt McGrain some 13 years ago.

That’s the only complete version of the fight I’ve seen (at least aware of) that includes the pre fight intros - so thanks to Matt for that.

    Yes that's the one mate.
So poor Max didn't have long to go after that appearance? He certainly looked old beyond his years didn't he.
I love seeing the old classic guys together like Louis, the Baer s and Liston.
