First off I don't like him and can't ever remember doing a positive post about him.He had undoubted talent which was especially suited to amateur boxing. He and his family were obviously blinded by the £signs when they turned pro and they protected his chin as well as they could.
He was pretty much damaged goods when most boxers are coming into their physical prime.I just wonder if he had done another Olympics and then turned pro whether his punch resistance may have been a bit better and lasted a bit better if he had turned pro 4yrs later and would have been tackling his first serious opponents when entering his physical prime?

No . The world was his oyster after the Athens Olympic's . His career
despite his losses has been successful . He has earned over 35 million
pounds. Though he claimed his family ripped off most of this.

Commercially it was the right time to turn pro, particularly as they were able to bring Kindelan over and "avenge" Khan's loss in the Olympics and provide a nice bit of closure on his amateur career. The stars had aligned for him to become a household name on the back of the 2004 Olympics, where he was the only member of the British team.

The only way waiting until 2008 would make sense commercially is if he won the gold medal, otherwise he would be perceived as less of a phenom. The hype train was based on him being a freakish talent, who while still a teenager was able to win a medal and was only thwarted by the outstanding and much more experienced defending champion.

It's far far from a done deal that he would win a gold in 2008. It would have been a challenge to just make the team at lightweight, with Gavin's emergence that would lead to him winning the world championships in 2007. If he wasn't able to get the lightweight spot, he would either need to drop down to feather (where Lomachenko was waiting), or move upto to light-welter where he probably wouldn't be strong enough at that point.

Even if he did make the team at lightweight, I don't think he would have got past Tishchenko who was a bad match up for him stylewise, as well as being an exceptional amateur.

Without the same Olympic hype, would he be the same attraction, around the same time that the class of 2008 were turning pro (including DeGale with a gold medal)? Would he have had the same opportunities such as beating up on a shot Barrera and getting a shot at a light-punching titlist like Kotelnik?

So many greats have turned pro while teenagers after their first Olympics, and the cream generally rises. The fundamental issues that have held back Khan's career would probably still played out the same, but if he waited till 2008 to turn pro he may have lost a lot of the marketability that helped build his career and open doors for him.

He might have avoided a few of his pro losses by starting later (Prescott, Peterson), but as said it was a no-brainer from a commercial point of view to turn pro when he did.

I can't envisage any version of Khan that doesn't eventually get knocked out at light-welterweight before moving up in weight to get knocked out some more.

Definitely started too early, his main problem was with his promotion though
