Kovalev had never gone past 8. You could say it was a bit of a mix between carrying Hopkins and making sure he had a lot left for the final rounds. When the bell sounded to start the 12th round the carrying went away.
People now looking at this fight and totally forgetting it was Bernard Hopkins he was in the ring with. The wiliest old fox in all of boxing. Kovalev fought a brilliant fight - displaying boxing skills many didn't believe he had. 49 years old or not, there's not a boxer Hopkins has ever faced who has dominated him for every second of the fight like that. Kovalev hit him with all he had at times, and BHop ate it up and spit it back out. Going hell-for-leather all the way through is exactly the fight B-Hop wanted him to fight - it's why he chose to fight him.
He was pacing himself. Never had gone 12 before and just wanted to make sure he didn't shoot his load too early. Knew Hopkins had the skills to take him into the late rounds so he made sure his pacing was right. Then he let it all hang out in the last round. Kovalev fought a good fight and gained a ton of experience that can only help him in the future
Thats the way Hopkins almost always fights. Its why he's not popular with the fans and does'nt draw PPV's. Hopkins is a fighter that takes what you give him and Kovalev last night by not headhunting and attempting to seek a KO, gave Hopkins nothing.
Cautious is so far from the word as when Kovalev set up the opening, he was throwing hard leather. Cautious is Wladimir Klitshko, that when the opening is there to land heavy, he keeps right on with the guaging jab so that he does'nt have to see return leather. Kovalev would have been all to willing to get into a war with Hopkins but he knew Hopkins was'nt about to do that. Kovalev fought smart, not cautious, there's a difference.
This stupid ****ing question again? He knocked out most of his opponents in less than 3 rounds yet he's going to carry a guy who has all that championship experience late in fights? God people here are so ****ing stupid.
It was a little disappointing not to see Sergey get after Hopkins more. He could have finished him at almost any point of the fight, he had him going on a few times. I don't think he carried him, he simply wanted to preserve his gas tank going into the unchartered territory of the later rounds.
