I was in a crowded, and loud room watching the fight last night. (And what a fight! DAMN!) I thought I heard Jim Lampley say something about Pac being better than Sugar Ray but I may have misheard... did he say this?? And what are your guys thoughts on this?
He said that he covered them both for HBO and that offensively Pacquiao is better than SRL. I think he's right. SRL tried to go toe-to-toe with Duran and was outfought by the smaller man. That being said, I think Leonard is still one of the most amazing offensive fighters ever
I think he did. That's def a big statement. Pac and Leonard are both up there as two of the best combination punchers ever. Both were dynamic as hell. I'd have to go with ray leonard but Pac is more unorthodox and unpredictable.
Thanks guys. Wow. I have to think some of that is Lampley getting caught up in the moment, but still, high praise indeed! I'm not sure how much I can agree with it though...as someone else said, purely offensively maybe its close but as a complete fighter, no. I'll have to pull out my Sugar Ray DVD's today..:bbb
He is not right. Ray fought and beat Duran,Hearns,Benitez and Hagler. All legends and greats. Lampley came into HBO in 1988 is I am correct, way after Ray had his prime fights against Duran,Hearns and Benitez and his past prime win over Hagler. So he saying he covered Ray is not correct. He did do ABC fights with Alex Wallua, but I do not remember him getting a Leonard fight since he did those fights with Wallua at the mid to late 80s. he did one Hearns fight in 1987 against Andries, and he did do Leonard/Hearns rematch in 1989 and the Leonard/Duran 3 in 1989 also, but not Ray's prime. Ray fought better opposition than Pacman in my mind. I like Manny and think he is great, but the overrating a day after the fight is ridiculous. The way some of you are talking, why not match him up with Klitchko for the heavyweight title. Each guy he fought the last 5 fights had a loss in the last 2 fights they had before Manny fought them. Compare that to Leonard, who fought and beat greats Duran who had no loss since Dejesus years before, beat undefeated greats Benitez and Hearns, and Hagler, who had not lost for 11 years before Ray beat him. How can you compare Pacman to Ray? Honestly this is a little ridiculous.
I think that pac is probably close to par with leonard offensively. the combinations he throws are amazing and the angles he creates are beautiful. it's different but still very effective. that's now - not pac of before.
