I read Merchant said during the DeLaHoya-Whitaker broadcast that DLH's choice of ring walk music (mariachi) "stinks". He said he actually likes mariachi music, but didn't think it was appropriate for this event. Apparently this set DLH into a rage and he tried to have Merchant removed from HBO. Did the fiesty ol' ******* really say this?
So what? What makes any one think that they must like some ones music they play? If he thinks it stinks, then thats what he feels. So what:roll:
Where in my post did I give an opinion on what he said? I simply thought it was funny, but wanted to check the story's authenticity since I read this at wikipedia. I love Larry's boldness.
If the Wiki statement about Larry has a footnote, check it out and you will get to the source which reported this. And i wouldn't be surprised if the story was authentic. Somehow, the Golden Boy strikes me as a prissy little ****er, who has to have everything done his way. This content is protected
I've always liked Oscar, but he must think a tad too highly of himself to think he could have the bold and legendary Larry Merchant removed from HBO. He's been broadcasting before the golden boy's mama was wipin' his nose. :nono
Larry didn't say Mariachi Music stinks, What he said as De La Hoya was entering the ring for the sweet pea fight with a live Mariachi band ablazing and Mexican Flags waving... he said, " you know Jim looking at all this one thing comes to mind, THIS SUCKS!!!" After that, in the Erik Morales fight against Daniel Zaragoza ( were Erik won his first title) at the El Paso County Coliseum. Which I got to see live :hey as soon as Larry Merchant Made his appearance The whole 90% Mexican crowd started chanting "LARRY SUCKS,LARRY SUCKS,..." You could see Lamply Laughing his ass off. The same thing happened again in El Paso When HBO came down with the DLH vs Patrick Charpientier fight. Funny ****, even though I was way up in the stands of the Sun Bowl I could see Larrys face turn red.
He either said it "stunk" or it "sucked" in that situation. http://www.azcentral.com/arizonarepublic/sports/articles/2008/07/07/20080707boxing0707.html Mayweather is talking about it, and that's a good thing. Yet, it's what he hasn't said. He didn't mention Larry Merchant's comments that Pernell Whitaker should have been allowed to enter the ring to soul music in April 1997 when Oscar De La Hoya's entrance was accompanied by mariachis. Merchant got into trouble for saying that mariachi music "stunk" in the fight-night setting. De La Hoya, who won a controversial decision, tried to get Merchant pulled off the air for a comment that angered Latinos yet could not have been seen as bias against African-Americans. http://www.fullerton.edu/affirmativeaction/aanews/MariachiThreat.htm http://www.thecolumnists.com/isaacs/isaacs276.html
He also called one of Oscar's early HBO fights an "Abortion" because his opponent was such a bum can't remember who it was though. I Believe HBO suspended him for a couple of broadcasts because of it.
