Yes, Moorer would have a decent chance. He's a better boxer than either McCall or Rahman, all he would need to do is land the big shot first. Byrd would make Lewis look bad. I also mentioned Corrie Sanders, who certainly has a puncher's chance. Sanders name was often mentioned by the press during Lewis upcoming title opponents. But Botha was chosen instead.
Sanders wasn't ranked until 2003, the year Lewis retired. Who did Moorer stop at heavyweight to suggest he might ko Lewis?
Winning the vacant paper IBF title with a split dec from moderate Axel Schulz , retaining it with a majority dec over the forgettable Vaughn Bean, and wearing down Frans Botha in the last round hardly makes him relevant. He retired for 3 years after those fights. Botha couldn't manage 2 complete rounds with Lewis. In 1997 Lewis was the holder of the WBC world championship a more prestigious title, and Ring ranked no 2 to Moorer's no3. In 96 Lewis was Ring ranked no 2 and Moorer no 4
He beat Holyfield, cut him and easily out boxed him. Moorer hit hard enough to get the job done. Lewis fought guys who were not ranked. Sanders would have been a better choice than Botha. Fights vs Southpaw's were there for Lewis. He didn't have any on his resume, except from that one early in his pro career who didn't even fight with that style.
So in answer to my question no-one! Sanders was only ranked for 3 months of Lewis's reign! In 2000 Lewis defended against Grant no3 and Tua no5. The only unranked fighter he fought that year was Botha. When Lewis defended against Botha the South African had lost just one fight in nearly 4 years ,to Mike Tyson a year and a half earlier. Why was Sanders more worthy of a title shot, he had been ko'd that same year? You want to get on Lewis' case for taking on Botha in between beating the number 3 and 5 contenders? In 2000 Sanders was ko'd by then unranked Hasim Rahman. You are desperately trying to construct a case to disparage Lewis for not fighting an unranked fighter who was ko'd in the year you say Lewis should have fought him? Its absurd! How many southpaws on Joe Louis' resume? Rocky Marciano's? Floyd Patterson's Ingemar Johansson's? Sonny Liston's? Ali fought one. Joe Frazier's? George Foreman's?
I like Lewis, but he gave a very lousy excuse for not fighting Byrd. If Louis would've simply said he wanted easier fights at that point in his career and dropped the belt no problem, but to say somebody offers no challenge and then surrender your belt says a lot. Byrd was easily a bigger challenge than Kirk Johnson or Vitali, who Byrd already beat and Vitali and his team had no interest in trying to win the belt back from Byrd. "Lennox Lewis will give up one of his heavyweight titles rather than fight mandatory contender Chris Byrd, claiming that Byrd offers him no great challenge and that no one wants to see the fight anyway." https://www.ourmidland.com/news/article/Lennox-Lewis-To-Give-Up-IBF-Title-7136943.php
Lewis had his last fight in June 2003.Sanders was ranked from the end of March 2003 after he beat Wlad.Three months as I said. When Bean fought Moorer he had engaged in 27 fights, 20 of them against 4th raters with losing records, he has one of the worst records regarding quality of opposition of any title challenger. Look it up! Sorry , at my age I can't afford to spend any more time on a moron. Please go and find someone who actually gives a **** about your posts.
how come noone else landed the big shot first if thats all you'd have to do? we dont know that, but we do know that both lewis and byrd made vitali look bad.
Mendoza why have you run away from the fact that only two HW champoins in HW history ever fought southpaws, so lewis represents the norm - nearly all of them fought no southpaws.
One thing I think that's getting lost in this discussion is Lewis wanted the Tyson rematch first and foremost around this time. He was already halfway out the door to retirement. I'm not sure if it was "unprecedented", but I never recall seeing someone win a dominant fight the way Lewis did against Tyson, where the victor was the one actively seeking the rematch. Lewis wanted another payday. While I personally would not have minded seeing Lewis vs Byrd, there was no real demand for this fight, especially in light of Lewis looking to maximize earnings in the twilight. It's not much different than when he got stripped for not facing Ruiz, which was ridiculous, as Holyfield got to face Ruiz for that vacant title, and Grant was the consensus #3 guy at that point in time. While the Botha defense was definitely a bit of a soft touch, it provided Lewis with another common Tyson opponent, and this was the only softer touch he had over a decent stretch which included Holyfield 2x, Grant, and also Tua - all 3 of whom were rated extremely well when Lewis faced them.
This thread was created expressly to hate on Lewis who is one of Mendoza's regular punch bags, along with Muhammad Ali,Joe Frazier,Joe Louis,& dear old Jack Johnson whom he has a particular mania about.
its not an interesting question because hardly any HW champions fought southpaws. Its an UNinteresting question which you are targetting lewis for rather than targetting it at everyone. all because your boy in his prime got wiped out by worst ever lewis inside less than half time.
I think its a relevant question as Lewis dropped one belt to avoid a south paw, and didn't fight the at least two other very good ones. Judging by the amount of replies you have in this thread, you're interested.
my replies are asking you why you've started a non interesting thread. You've called that a sign of interest. Yeah I am interested as to why you are starting an uninteresting thread....thats NOT interest in your topic, genius.
