Did Liston blind Ali in their first bout?

Someone should really make a movie about Sonny Liston. What an interesting movie that could be, about an interesting character and somewhat mysterious heavyweight boxing champion.

Who knows? in the movie "Ali" where he had input there is a suggestion they rubbed a foreign substance on Liston's gloves. He asks his corner to rub something on his gloves. On the proverbial other hand Ali and Liston became friends after their two fights. If Ali thought he tried to blind him he would have never forgave him. I'll give Sonny a pass. Muhammad did.

 

What is your source that Ali and Liston became friends after their two fights? I never heard or read that.

 

Ali always admitted later in life that he was lucky Sonny was hurt in their first fight, and lucky he fought Liston when Sonny had gotten old.

Ironically, Ali came to like and admire Liston, and far from the days of his driving a bus to Sonny’s house to harass him, Ali made a point of visiting Sonny when he was in town, or when he was present at one of Sonny’s fights, and the two men became friends.

Ali, who had baited Sonny mercilessly when he was trying to get a fight with the Champ, came to like Liston in the aftermath, and once said:

“Sonny Liston is the only honest man I know.”


Ali made a point to visit Sonny every time he was near one of Sonny’s fights, or where Sonny lived.

Their friendship didn’t change the fact Ali thought Sonny was the scariest human being he had ever known.

I don’t follow that line of thinking.

People have forgiven others for far worse — murdering family members, trying to kill them, robbing them, etc.

Had Ali lost because of being blinded in the fight, he might not have been forgiving. Or maybe he would have anyway. But he won, so it’s a lot easier to forgive.

Holyfield seems to have forgiven Tyson for biting off his ****ing ear, so …

It's true that Machen went into the Liston fight unable to fight with his right hand. He courageously fought Sonny using only his left. Nobody in the history of boxing could have whipped Liston without use of a right hand. Liston's primary weakness was vulnerability to right hands thrown over his left jab.

 

They played "Sunny" at his funeral.

 

Yes my point is, if Machen was really blinded by Liston, he would've said something in real time, like he did about his legitimate injury

Did I miss it or did you never come through with your theory?

 

I know that Mark Knopfler made a song for Sonny Liston, and that Liston wanted a guitar based blues song about boxers, so maybe that could be used. Either that, or a new song be made for him.

 

At the very least, Ali would've made a public statement condemning Liston for trying to blind him, especially to hype the rematch. But as we know, Ali and Dundee both said Liston didn't try to blind him, and the referee checked Liston's gloves and found nothing.

 

There’s one with Ving Rhames as Liston. It was not good.
