Did Marciano actually break Rex Layne's teeth out?

It really happened...Here's the newspaper article. Apparenlty broke one tooth out at the gum, and damaged others. As Layne's handlers said, "the tooth went out with the gumshield."

"Rex Layne lost a left upper tooth..the tooth broke at the gums when Marciano caught the Utahn in the mouth with a full right hand. Layne was taken immediately after the fight to a New York dentist to have the teeth X-rayed and also for treatment on a broken tooth."

Yeah, apparently Layne needed dentures after the fight. Poor guy, sounds really sympathetic and devestated by the loss. No wander he never got his career back on track again.

I know its not funny to get your teeth knock out like Layne did, but that quote had me laughing about looking better.

 

This isn't really unique among heavyweights.

Tyson knocked out Mitch Greens teeth. I'm pretty sure Bonecrusher sent one of Witherspoons teeth flying out of his ****ing head

 

Not sure how unique but I really wouldn't say its common in the modern era. The fact a healthy tooth was broken out with the gum shield and others were damaged is pretty unique I would say. At any rate its certainly one of the more devestating knockouts in history with Layne's delayed reaction and crumbling as noted by others "as if he was shot."

Factoring in glove size and padding is more then a little important here as well.

 

It was news worthy in the 50s. And certainly has held up as a major talking point regarding the match. Do you feel this is unfair? Are there more teeth breakings that you feel are getting the shaft? Will some people argue and try to belittle anything?
