Did Marciano and Patterson face the same version of Archie Moore?

He was still a great fighter.

Just a little less than the fighter that faced Marciano. That sort of beating has an effect on anyone.

 

Floyd didn't NEED to floor Moore "4 times". Archie was counted out on the 2nd KD.

Marciano was knocked down in round 1. Patterson was not knocked down at all. Being KD'd is a blemish on any performance.

Please tell me what Patterson did wrong ?

Commentary by Rocky Marciano.

 

I am open minded to the idea that Moore might have lost a bit, or indeed that he might have been compromised by injury.

It is always a mistake to come down too heavily on ones side of the argument.

 

It is interesting to me how parallel Moore and Tommy Gibbons are.

Gibbons went 15 with Dempsey in 1923. Then won 11 fights in a row leading into the Tunney fight.

Tunney handled Gibbons easier than Dempsey and stopped him in 12.

The difference? Gibbons fought Tunney 23 months after Dempsey, and went from 32 to 34. Moore fought Patterson 14 months after Marciano, and went from 38 to 39.

In both cases I think styles had a lot to do with it. Tunney did what Gibbons did best better than Gibbons and so overmatched him. Patterson's quick hands were exactly what gave Moore the most problems defensively.

It is an interesting coincidence that both Gibbons and Moore had 11 fights and victories between the two big losses.

Floyd-Rock late 56? That's a different 'animal'.
But the Mongoose that fought Rock was chiseled and ready and the 'undertrained' Mongoose that fought Floyd was a tad doughy and out of shape.

Moore said he over-trained for Patterson. Moore was a quarter of a pound lighter for Floyd than he had been for Marciano, and in his previous 12 fights prior to Floyd he was only once under that weight ,in a defence of his lhvy ttile.
